Oh my.
My UMT70 out of a sudden only gives a phase shiftet, very low signal into the mic pre. Sounds awful.
Have to say I had the impression weeks before the final issue, that the Output level of the mics varys from day to day.
I changed the cable with no soloution.
Seems the mic is dieng after 14 years of use?
Last year one of my KM 184 had something very similar. Neumann send it back to me with no comment but also no charge of money.
Do some of the techie guys have an opinion on this. Ver very wired.

Is the recording phasey sounding our just in your headphones? If it’s in your headphones it may be a phase issue in your headphone cue setup? Just a thought

Suddenly?
My first "test" would be to try all three polar patterns....and in doing so both sides of the capsule. That design has inherent issues with moisture build up, IME. If you put it into Fig8 and the back side sounds normal(ish) and the front doesn't, capsule. I've not put it up for anyone but me since having it cleaned some years ago....its, knock on wood been fine.
But, then if all three position sound like different variations on this "new lousy"....its more likely the head amp. I've just never had a solid state head amp go south on me. Obviously any kind of component can fail....but, a mic capsule is the most fragile part....next the tube (which this doesn't have)....next switches (like the ring that selects patterns on the Gefells....so, also flip the pad and HPF switches back and forth--make sure they're functioning properly.
My first thought for low output and phases was that something had put it into Fig8 or Omni and the front side of the capsule was shorted out due to moisture (or damage)--thus you're only hearing whatever room reflections bouncing into the backside.

I moved 20 times the pattern switch.... and boom worked like new. Only thing which is still crazy the Output power. The AKGs have way more power but they are way more noisy too. I love the UMTs 8 for my voice... I give you a virtual hug.

Glad it worked. Hugs back.
I've never taken it apart to actually clean those contacts, but it sounds like it's worth looking up the disassembly instruction and getting in there with a little contact cleaner.

I send it too MG I live near them 3 h by car. I could try it myself but I know I am no good with small screws etc.

I have one of these mics. Never had an issue like this, but one day the pattern ring came loose and I couldn't change it. It's a real pain to take those apart and put them back together!
The metal parts come loose once you get the pieces apart, and it's a balancing act to get them back together and hold everything while you tighten it up.
I think those pieces were brass, which might tarnish a little, which is why moving the switch a bit makes it work.

I love the umt its rock solid and still lives on with stupid guitar players ....yes it dropped 2 times maybe thats an issue with the pattern ring after all the years.
A checkup since 2002 cant hurt either?

i live by one simple rule. Never attempt to take a Gefell mic apart. Ever. How many times have you seen a grown man cry because he made that mistake 😁 For me it was about 5 I remember and one service tech!
