Anyone shot these two out on overheads. or given consideration for choosing either one for a given situation?

Never used the KU4. Always thought about using slightly brighter mics for OH’s and darker for room. Say a pair of C12s on OH and Ribbon/67s on Room.

I'm with John - I always end up wanting a brighter overhead set. Right now my favorite are the Gefell UM70's, but actually, I'd LOVE to try a pair of U87's with the InnerTube insert mod for overs. Muscular like the 87, but open and airy and lifted up top. I only have one though, and I can't seem to feel good about mono overheads. But yeah, a pair of C12's would be awesome. Don't see that happening anytime soon. LOL

Lucas CS-1s are excellent on OHs! But then, the stereo Royer is too and it’s not exactly bright.

Buy both and try? I bet a reworked original KU3 has greater resale and far sluttier.
I usually like darker OH and brighter room, distance being a benefit with poor technique trash can smashers. Good cymbals and technique can work with brighter overheads, but I rarely see that combo. I like ribbons with drum OH for the way they emphasize the fundamental frequencies over the harmonics, so if you're chasing body they are good.

Well, I just meant they're cool C12ish mics! I had one on order (for a few years) but cancelled ultimately— 2nd kid was either born or on the way, I forget. My bud Ryan at Sharkbite in Oakland has a pair and I love tracking there. (That's his room in my avatar). Have access to a place w/ a pair of Flea 12s but have not tracked there yet. Looking forward to it.

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked to make an overhead sound like a 67.

Everyone always says that ribbons bring out the shells of the drums, but they are also more flattering and true I think to the transients on cymbals, especially brighter crashes and quicker rides. So I usually prefer eq'd ribbon these days.
Fig 8 mics like Coles can reject things from side in a way cardioids or tighter patterns like KU4 or M160s can't, and vice versa for ceilings.
That said, the U67 is on countless records and will probably sound more open than the KU4 so I'd go for that. Against pair of Coles, not so sure.

A 67 set to figure 8 gives you the best of both.

I own and have tried on Overheads,
Original U67's Tube SM69 Original Km-84's C-12's Gefell, UM-70's Vintage AKG 451E's Coles 4038's U87's Royer SF-12
For me, the Royer SF-12 wins all the time, as I love the overheads to capture the overall drum sound instead of just cymbals.

Huh i tend to like darker mics as overheads. Tames the cymbals down and helps the toms sound bigger.
That said, I really like DPA4006 for overheads. Not your typical OH mics and you'll want a nice room to use them(Omni's) but man...talk about some killer detail and sizzle with big toms.

I just tracked drums last week in a new room and tried the SF-12 the studio had on OH for the first time. I added a touch of top end to open then up (super dark cymbals) and was just blown away. Fantastic mic. Anybody ever use the Royer tube ribbons?

Yes! The 122v absolutely kills it on electric guitar. I need to spend some more time with it (at a room I book).
