I might have gotten one on order, price matched through Zzound’s sister company American Musical Supply.
I had been looking into a 1073-ish EQ either through GAP or a 500 series module.
I have a Stam SA-73 with a Sowter output transformer, and will be curious to compare if all goes well.

I think if I were going to pick one up I'd still go for the XMod option. I don't see them on Zzsounds anymore, standard or XMod. Wow! That was fast! Bummer. I almost went for one/two.

I got my 7603 in the mail yesterday.
I only had a brief moment to try the preamp last night with an 00-sized acoustic guitar and a BeesNeez BU87i C mic.
I definitely preferred the sound on this source with the EQ engaged, even with the bands turned off. With the EQ disengaged, it sounded closer to my Stam SA-73. The Stam, which doesn’t have an EQ section, was a little lighter in the low mids and high end. I also compared to a Warm Tonebeast on the stock X731 and X18 op amp settings. The 7603 was clearly in the same family as the Stam when compared to the Warm.
I took a peak at the spectrum with Voxengo Span. It looked like turning on the EQ emphasized harmonics in the 2-3kHz area that wasn’t present with either the 7603 or Stam without EQ. Perhaps this is why people familiar with the 1073 circuit say the preamp only isn’t quite the same experience.
Inspired by the 1073 impedance thread, I also tried using the low impedance settings with the BU87i C. The 300 ohm setting provided a bit too much low end along with a level boost. It seemed more exaggerated than on the Stam. The low impedance setting seems like it would work well with a SM57 on electric guitar, like it does on the Stam.
It’ll take a little while to get familiar with this preamp on other sources like electric guitar, kick, and snare. Then I have to get to the EQ. If I happen to record anything that sounds decent, I’ll share.

Enjoy!
the Warm is an api clone not neve, so I wouldn’t expect it to sound like the stam or CL?

Im surprised to hear that Warm and Stam being comparable. I’d always assumed Stam was a step above.

The Warm doesn’t sound like the others and probably isn’t relevant for comparison. It happens to be in the same rack as the Stam and 7603, so I recorded a quick pass with it as well for my own reference.

Anyone compare the Chameleon Labs to AMS Neve's DPX 1073 offering, or Stam's. I'm curious how they would sound next to one of those.

I was tracking some guitar, and took a couple minutes to compare the 7603 with a Stam SA-73. I put a BeesNeez BU87I C mic 12” away from the 12th fret of my Alvarez parlor acoustic guitar. Separate takes. I thought I might’ve been drifting out of position from the mic, but did the comparison twice and arrived at the same sounds. 7603 without EQ - link
Stam SA-73 - link

Stam SA-73 - linkThat was really helpful. Thank you. Is that 7603 stock or X-Mod?

Hey, thanks for sharing these. It's not a major difference or anything, but I definitely prefer the Stam here. Has a clearer, more articulate midrange for sure.

Agreed. Still curious about the X-Mod and how much of a difference it makes.

Agreed. Still curious about the X-Mod and how much of a difference it makes. When I adjusted those clips for volume they felt even more similar. Also I think the EQ on the Chameleons is feather in its cap, which we dont hear in this. My 7602 EQs sounded awesome. The Tape Op review said the X Mod was probably not worth the extra money, and that some very subtle Low end shaping gets the 7603 to the same space. Im very curious to see what Marek has planned for the company! Based on his other company (Dangerous) probably good things. He offered to come chat about CL and their (new) products once he is more settled in and all the business details are sorted.

I have a xmod I've often been curious as to how the stock sounds.i will say the eq is very sweet on this thing. Can boost 16k alot with no harshness.

Finally used my pair on a session. No idea how they compare to a 'real' Neve 1073…closest thing I have is a Vintech Dual 72 (which isn't the same at all) but the CL 7603s sound awesome, the EQ is great. Helpful features. Very happy. Used it with a Telefunken TF-39 and Samar AL95 on vocals, acoustic, and drum OH and room.

I know they are different how do you like the 72's compared to the 7603? I ask only because I thought of having a pair before.
