Seems like forever since I embarked on hot rodding my cp5 preamps.
I am calling them C-pips.... They are now sporting audio upgrade pip modules. My issue with the original cp5 was they sounded dull.
Post pip mod and I feel like there is more air and more snap. Photo to follow.
I think diy rec should release v2 of the cp5 so it takes the pip without mod.

I put the pip into my cp5 as well, it sounds quite clear! did you have to stack a bunch of sockets? That's what Jim Williams told me to do - looks weird, but works right!

I used the sockets also. it's a little high. I need to find a thinner one to go on the top.

Ah so you are swapping out the IC amp?

Ah so you are swapping out the IC amp? Yes with an audio upgrades pip module. Plus the capacitor needs to be replaced so it can be remounted on an angle to make more room. Jim also recommended a resistor value swap. I'll do that but I wanted to test the before and after so left out the resistor change so i can put the THAT chip back in and its stock again. So resistor change to follow.

Hmm wonder how the pip chip would fair in the SK1DI from FiveFish audio. Uses an THAT1510 chip. Looks like it would plug right in. I built one in school. Never did a big shoot out with it but used it on an old Rodes and it had a TON of gain. Sounded good. Be even cheaper then the CP5..but a crap faceplate and no color module. fivefishstudios.com/500serieskits/sk1di/

Well I need to use it more. I feel like the difference was noticeable but didn't do an ab.
I was thinking it sounded good enough that I will do 2 more and the 5 fish you pointed out may be my starting point.
I have a 3 day session this weekend so will know more after that.

The Fivefish is a cool kit. Can add an LED VU, Stepped Gain knob, Aluminum Face plate, and even an output transformer to it for extra money. But if you do all the options its a $260 pre. I think the faceplate and the transformer would be cool. Add the PIP mod to it and probably a pretty awesome lil mic pre.

at this stage i'm most likely going to go again with 2 cp5's and mod them.
i've gone of the five fish stuff because they will only take one transformer and when i asked the spec of the transformer i've had no further response.

Not bad. The signal/noise ratio isn't very good. Lot of hiss in the guitar one. Not as sparkly as I would have hoped either. But a nice flat sound pre.

The acoustic guitar has hiss. That's a result of mic self noise and amount of gain needed to get there because it was played so quietly. Ie. MIC pre one notch back from cranked and then 6db in the daw.
Personally I'm pretty happy and will build more. I think they sound very good.

What exactly is the pip?

A pip is the audio upgrades pip preamp. It is an upgrade that can be done to the cp5 preamp. Usual method is to redo a cap and then use a bunch of dip sockets to get the pip module to fit above the front panel daughter board.
It doesn't quite work though and results in the module having some issues when put in a lunchbox.
Using a 90degree dip socket fixes all the issues.
