A neighbor gave me a uher deluxe, which powers up and seems perfectly functional. It has, I believe a single motor but two heads and does 7.5. Its supposed to sound excellent and have very good w&f specs. I understand the capstan can be misshaped from non use and that belts should likely be replaced. I am curious about printing ( as hot as possible), my delta master stereo mix to the tape and then printing that in my logic session and seeing what happens when I basically do a dry/wet balance ? What tape should I be looking for ? Any thoughts ?

You won't get dry/wet remix out of this, as Cortland said you'll get a random phase tunnel, with parts like Itchycoo Park or River Deep Mountain High.

ok so I could tape the master outs just to see/hear what it sounds like but that's it ?
So could be cool as a fx and or for texture here and there. I will try it just for fun and see
Yes I will post !

You can use it as a tape delay.

Exactly, since I am still running in my delta and learning about doing real time mixes: thought it would be cool to hook up the uher and just play with it

You can use it as a tape delay. Not if it's only two heads. You need a 3 head machine for that. Those old Uhers were designed for news gathering. They're pretty rugged. The deformation problem is not with the capstan, which is hardenedf steel, it's with the rubber pinch roller. DO NOT attempt to clean the rubber parts with alcohol - it dries out and degrades the rubber. Order some "Head, Red, and Roll Cleaner" from here:http://www.precisionmotorworks.com/HotStuff.html#Hotstuff_hrr It's a little pricey but it lasts a rteally long time and works amazingly well on both heads (and guides) and rubber parts.

Research "sticky shed" and prepare to do a lot of research on what tapes from what eras will work. Your machine might be biased for specific formulations of tape as well.
