...stuff is so expensive. Man alive. I checked out a Fat Bustard YouTube vid the pther day just to see what it was about. Then the Phoenix. Man, these are two nice pieces. If I had the means to buy a couple 5k pieces, I would get these in for a demo asap.

...if I sell my Doublewide, Fed+ (both of which haven't even come in yet), and BLA EQ, I might be able to afford a used Phoenix....

There is a Phoenix ending in 45 on eBay. It's at $2400 right now. I can't swing it, but it's a pretty good price. Good luck guys.

unit7, you have one of these right? Where do you like it? Would you want more than one? Anyone else have these?

unit7, you have one of these right? Where do you like it? Would you want more than one? Anyone else have these? Yes, and just got my second in. None of them are the mastering version. I always seem to prefer Chandler/Neve'ish stuff for drums but besides that I think they shine on absolutely everything. Vocals, acoustics, bass etc etc. Using on piano right now on a jazz piano trio mix. Meters hardly moving. The same fattening feeling I get from the RI STA but with the added flexibility of having separate input gain and threshold, and of course sidechain filter and that it's stereo. The meters seem more sensitive than others and I think you should be a little careful, especially if you're having it on the 2bus. On individual channels if you get the meter to work more than 4 dB you could just double check by solo listening to make sure you're not doing something you'll regret later :-) Btw re the quality issues discussed from time to time on the purple site. Though the knobs don't feel as good as RI or Fearn etc and the internal wiring seems a bit 'flimsy' I've had zero issues w my four TC units (got two Vultures too). The second Phoenix was bought used and sent from Holland, packed poorly and shipped by angry gorillas, and unfortunately one corner of the faceplate was bent badly, BUT: unit still working!

Thanks Paul. I'm really excited about these. I think that they're exactly what I was looking for. Super versatile, stereo or dual mono, busses or acoustic sources. Can't go wrong. Started rearranging my racks last night, but need to spend some more time on it. How do these do with heat? Do I need space above and/or below? Thanks! Quick peak at the mastering Phoenix with the RJR, TX5C's, DW and my crappy patchbays... -Jesse

These don't get too hot. Of course if you have no space below, above and a tight, closed back of your rack heat will start to build up quickly, but the way you've done on that pic I think you'll be fine. I guess those patchbays aren't too deep, so that's a good thing too.

I guess those patchbays aren't too deep, so that's a good thing too. Yep, patchbays are shallow and my racks are open backed, so that should be helpful. I popped my Mastering Phoenix on the 2 buss for a couple of my old completed mixes last night and see what you mean about the fattening and that a little goes a long way. Both finished mixes already had 2 buss compression though, so a that would contribute to how it was working. I didn't get as much time with it as I would like, but so far I'm really happy with it. Looking forward to putting it on some acoustic sources and drum buss too. I also stuck the Rooster on the 2 buss in line before the Phoenix for some testing. The eq on the Rooster seemed musical, but the low cut filter seemed a bit too aggressive for 2 buss work. A touch of low boost, mid cut, and 4k seemed to work nicely on both mixes that I was playing with. The attitude knob was actually better than I expected too. On the milder mix I liked it at 1 in pentode mode and the more aggressive rock mix felt really nice at 2 in pentode. unit7, do you mainly keep the Phoenix on your 2 buss? If so, do you have anything else on your 2 buss? Eq or compression? If not, what do you have on the 2? Does anyone else have any of this Thermionic stuff?

jcoutu1 Jesse, I wouldn't hesitate using it on the mix bus if it wasn't for my stellar Analoguetube Fairchild clone which is routed to a pair of Cartec eqs.
