whats your favorite gear setup to record upright. It depends on the piano and what I have available. I've used a pair of Sony ECM50/ECM55 lavaliers hung inside with reasonable success, they don't get in the way, can stay set up all the time, and sound pretty good - or did in the piano we had at my old place. Sadly, I lack an acoustic piano here. I've alsop used spaced pairs of SDCs pointing across the soundboard with the top panel removed, and the same with an additional mic in back, centered and low down, maybe a foot, foot-and-a-half from the floor, polarity flipped. I'd like a DPA or Earthworks rig but can't justify the expense.

I'm not sure if I'm overdubbing or tracking live so my channel count may necessitate a single mic which will be either an nt2 or mk012 near the top of the piano.
If its overdubbing then ill throw the kitchen sink at it so I can learn.
In that case ill use Spaced pair gefell pm860 at seat level Ortf ksm137 just above the lid. Spaced pair ldc on the rear soundboard.

I've used ortf m930's behind facing the soundboard. That's the usual here. . Perhaps some room mics. Maybe even a 633a on the floor in between the m930's compressed, or not, for some midrange bite.
I also used a m269c and a 77dx on the upper and lower register respectively face down to the sound board from above also to great effect. That yielded a wider stereo image.
Standard Yamaha upright. listen to the piano in different areas to see where the sound you are looking to capture is coming from the piano. For my piano if I open the top and mic inside it sounds rather far away. My piano projects from behind where the soundboard is open. For me that is where I mic it 99% of the time. If I took the entire front face off and the lid maybe I could get more interesting sounds. But as it stands all the good stuff is from the soundboard. Unless I turn it into a tack piano I plan on keeping it fully assembled.
