So, one of my DRIP STA levels, was making a noise, not unlike a scratchy pot, but it wasn't a pot.
So I thought I would whip it out of the rack, and have a wee peek inside.
I use a keyboard stand, with a rectangular SKB type case as a portable workbench, slide guitar stand....
So I set the keyboard stand up next to the rack, put the case on top.. lifted up the STA Level placed it on the case...and to my horror the whole thing collapsed, and the STA Level went crashing to the deck in slo motion.

Luckily, the only thing that broke, was the power on globe... which I have a zillion replacements for...
I really got off lucky, it could have sheared off transformers...busted tubes.... really close call.
So, anyways, I replaced the 6V6s and my noise problem is gone... I think it was a microphonic tube, as I could tap around and get the noise, with the new tubes, all good.
So kiddies, let Uncle Wiz teach you a lesson...dont do this.. STA Levels Don't Bounce!!!!!
Cheers
Wiz

I was working at the place with the ex-BBC Neve full of 33114/33115 modules, which had a Pultec EPQ1A and an LA-3 sitting on the meter bridge (not the smartest move), came in one day and wondered where they'd gone, got busy, didn't look behind the console for another day. Well. They'd taken out half the output tubes of an Altec tube power amp on the way down, and it kept running! And no one noticed the sonic difference! When I got back there, the fallen pieces were on the floor, still powered up, and there were power tubes with broken glass staring at me. The Altec was fine! They were engineered for worst case scenario.
Lately someone pushed over a gobo and it took over a Sunn 6 x 10" cabinet with a 75 lb Ampeg V4 on it, Ampeg was fine after a 3-4 foot fall, but the Shure 300 ribbon it took out was not.....

So I thought I would whip it out of the rack, and have a wee peek inside. I suppose this is one of those instances where the classic hinged-front + exposed-components-rear cases would come in handy.

I was doing live sound once and the guitar player thought he'd help out by setting up the keyboard players rig. He had one of those big 76 key Korg Tritons. He forgot to lock the stand and the second he placed the keyboard on it the whole thing collapsed, just like you described. All I was thinking was, damn I'm so glad that happened to him and not me! lol
It was probably the first and last time the guitar player helped out.

Yikes! Glad everything worked out!
Hit up the local home improvement shop and get one of those work mate shop tables. They have little trays in front that helps for holding screws and hardware etc, and the good ones are pretty sturdy! Not that pricey either!

STA LEVEL does not bounce but i tell you what bounces - diamonds bounce. Those suckers bounce and and can go anywhere you have to handle them real carfeul. Dropped and lost a few of themover the years luckily they were only small ones.
