I haven't done banjo, closest's I've done is mandolin.
For what we were doing we mostly wanted the attack portion of the sound, so a KM184 was used about a foot back. I liked my ribbon on it on solo, but it just didn't suit the mix.
I've heard good things about an MD421 on a banjo.

Mandolin and Banjo are not quite the same... they are very different actually when it comes to recording and capturing the essence of the sound.
JC, what does the banjo sound like now and how do you need it to sound?? What music form is it for, and is it a 5 string or a tenor?
tell me that much and I'll nail it down for you. I've recorded a LOT of banjo for country, bluegrass, folk and jug... even some on pop and EVEN a little jazz/ragtime!!

I've heard good things about an MD421 on a banjo. Oh dear Lord, no. Not on a Banjo. The 421 brings out "clunk" on a banjo even more than it is naturally there, and it is the loudest part of the extraneous noise that you are trying to overcome to get to something that MIGHT pass as tone with the instrument. The only thing worse on a banjo is a 57.

I have no info about banjo type. Tune is folk with Bluegrass influence. Artist is here... Www.greane.comP. S. I didn't record the tracks on his page.

Nice click trsck in the background. That always ends a listen for me.
Ok, it's hipster folk. Small Ribbon or mellow sounding condensor microphone, 1' to 18" off the head, positioned to aim just behind the bridge. Fairly hot gain in your preamp and I would hit a comp like an 1176 on the way in as well. You're looking for detail but in the delicate ribbon way... You could use a Royer, an RCA44, an AKG C414xls or uls, and get great results.

Like saying you can sneak up on the bear and drop an anvil on his head, or shoot him with a spear from 100 yards away... 8)

I've done banjo a few times. LDC, a little off axis, about 1' back from the place where the fingerboard meets the body. Ribbons are too low output for a lot of banjos I think. The condensor pics up more attack, which you'll need in the mix. EQ on banjo in mix sucks, so try to make it sound good at the source.
EDIT: Don't try to make it sound "full". Once you add the bass (upright?) it'll just sound muddy. Just make sure you have good clean top end on it.

Try both methods. See which one you prefer. And a ribbon with the right high gain preamp is just fine. But you will need about 45-50db of gain!

That style of banjo in the samples seems pretty laid back. Shouldn't have too much trouble finding the sweet spot. If it were a Gibson Mastertone played the bluegrass pickers I'm used to, it will peel you ears back and very hard to record. I usually pad a condenser and place it about 2 or 3 inches under the right hand and about 8 inches to a foot back off the tone ring. Sounds like he probably plays with fingers instead of picks? Much easier to record.

Thanks everyone. We didn't get to the banjo today, it'll be the next session. He is a finger player and plays pretty quietly. Heard the banjo a bit today and it's darker than I expected. I've got a u87, mkl-2500, and a ksm44 in line for the session. We'll do a quick shoot before we get started and figure out mic, pre, and placement.

"I've been an officer for 30 years, and that's the first banjo killing I've seen" Obviously, he's not a fan of Steve Martin:
