i'm looking for a simple tube preamp diy project to explore.
my first thought was to buy an electro harmonix 12ay7 pedal and rack it with mods including new power supply and transformers.
second thought was to try the general audio research BA-2c boards.
third was a recording with gas ampex 351 project.
does anyone know any other simple projects i could look into or have any thoughts on the three above.

Any of the NewYorkDave designs, the Ruffrecords designs also worth exploring. Note that BA-2 board isn't proper direct feed output, so it's not really a BA-2! See the GroupDIY thread about it.

He put a lot of designs on GroupDIY year ago. 'one bottle', etc. He's long gone, doesn't participate, never sold anything.

I think tube depot has some diy tube amp kits. Never tried any of them so I can't comment on how good they are but they're worth checking out.

If you want 500 series hybrid, Soundskulptor has this: www.soundskulptor.com/uk/mp566.htmlIt uses a 12AT7 on the front end. Don't know how they sound, but I've had my eye on them for a while now. |

Untrue. Do the exchange rate and JLM is actually very reasonably priced in some areas. In other areas you are getting a very high end piece of gear with expensive parts in it. The price reflects this. Orange 86 I've heard good things about. Someone did a redd preamp too. NY Dave stuff will actually teach you a lot. Ian Bell has good stuff too.

The Orange 86 is a REDD TYPE 47 on steroids with many modification options.
You could always strip a tube amp chassis like Bogen and make a 2 bottle hamptone or NY Dave. If you’re on a tight budget you may find yourself wanting cheap transformers, you need em, just save up and get good ones.
