Thinking of selling the vintage La3a...and replacing it with a 165a (or more modern VCA unit). Here's my thinking--if I"m tracking bass, I want attack/release control...and for lead vocals, a VCA is the only way to do slow and gentle "always working" leveling. As I work towards my goal of not giving a F about what digital system I use to record...part of that is making sure the sound is mostly there on the way in...
...plus, the kids seem to be all about some vintage Ureis right now, so I can probably get a pretty penny for it.
Will I regret it?

I'd say go for it. If it's bass your concerned with, nothing is better than VCA. Plus you get the added benefit of an awesome vocal comp. Which you probably already have but another one can't hurt.

I'd regret it even thinking about it. The LA3A's are the LAST comps I'll ever sell. I understand what you're after, but I'd never sell 3A;s to accomplish what you're after. But maybe you have 6 of em, and 4 is all you need. If so, please sell. To me. I only have 2......

I, sadly, have only one LA3a. It is lonely. It needs a friend. Pity my poor LA3a and give yours a better home. And then you can give a 165a a good home. Also worthy of consideration: the 160SL or 162SL

La3a's are awesome even in clone form, an original la3 is gold! I wouldn't sell it man.

Ward...are you here in town? How DO the new DBX units compare sonically?
JK...that's funny. I thought about you when I posted this...my rule is "never sell vintage"...because, I've had like 4 or so 3as here at once...and this one was hand picked as "most euphonic" to stay...been with me a good long time. Anyway--this one you can't get back, you know? But, as I have had too many vocal tracks lately that it didn't work for...and I honestly no longer care for MY own caterwauling...
I'm probably going to go through this recording cycle (meaning of my own stuff) before making the call...but, right now, it's one of a few pieces sitting here with a bullseye as "underutilized...sell".

I wouldn't sell the 3A. If you're really wanting a 165A, I'd suggest you check out the FMR PBC-6A first. It covers a lot of the same bases, and it's way smaller. The stereo link options look awesome too.

As close as I've ever gotten to being attached to a piece of gear was and is the sta-level - and thanks to Retro, I can sell one and know where to get one exactly like it when I want it again. You can't say that with vintage gear. Now acoustic guitars are different. You can have ten of the same guitars and there's ONE that just smokes the rest. When you find a great one, you should hang in to it.

Comment of the day! I never sell anything . But that may change, things are getting out-of-hand around my place: Burl in, Burl out. I'm in AD/DA heaven.

I've got a friend who owns a studio here in Cincy who has two very clean La3a's for sale. He's the original owner of the them too so I know they have been taken care of.
