Has anyone here done any modifications to a Rode NTK? Did you find them useful? I have done a small bit of research into this, but any info I have found seems quite out-dated. I am wondering if there are any more up-to-date modifications that someone has discovered?

So I have to ask, what don't you like about your NTK, and why do you think modding it will make it better?

Just want to tinker/experiment and have one lying about. I have never disassembled/worked-on/built a microphone so I thought one of the more experienced people here could offer some suggestions.

Ok, fair enough. Do you have a schematic for it that you can post?

What type capsule is in it?

pictures look like a regular K67 type. In mics like these and the chinese types, it's not the capsule as a whole that is the issue, it's usually the diaphragm tension that is poorly done. It's not hard to copy a backplate and some metal rings.. It IS hard to get the tension right. I wouldn't bother with changing out the capsule just yet.
I did read that the newer Rode mics were all made with C12 type edge-terminated capsules, although I'm not sure they are.

The only info I could come up with is that the capsule is a "gold-sputtered, 25mm". I cannot find any schematics, though I don't feel the need to spend too much time looking. I did discover several threads on other DIY sites and the general consenses is that there really isn't anything to make an improvement to the circuit. In some cases people found that their attempts at mods made matters worse. So, it seems that I will hold off using this mic as a learning experience.

Generally a very high quality capsule, and a select NOS tube will make a larger diff than anything else. My rode k2 had a c12 type, I put a Tim Campbell capsule in it, nos mullard and a bunch more, the tube and capsule made the largest change, the circuit component improvements evened the range and smoothed the performance of the mic. It's as good as any tube mic I've ever used.

Usually with the cheap tube mics, the tube is the worst part. Next would be that they are likely using a K67 type capsule with a non-K67 type circuit, which means that the capsule has the extra "hype" on the high end, which is de-emphasized by the correct circuit, but is not in most chinese mics, which gives the impression of the "chinese hype and sizzle".
The second issue is usually the output transformer on chinese mics, they don't properly snub the transformer so they tend to "ring" and give hyped sound too. Replacement transformers are an expensive fix for a problem that isn't really the original transformer.

I have a few friends who swear by the Rode ii. The have big artist sing into it all the time. I think it's also the mic Adele uses?
One of my friends may have a mod or update done to his. I'll try and find out.

The modded K2 I have is really really nice, a bit rolled off on the bottom and modern sounding compared to my matachung C12, but I generally cut down there anyway, both these mics have Tims capsule.
