I'm not understanding what is going on in these pictures.. Did you reskin your own capsule? How did you do it without the proper tension measuring devices? Even the smallest amount of mis-tensioning can cause strange resonances in mics, which manifest as wonky frequency response.. Even with the proper tension devices, hand skinning is only around 80% proper yield for "screw on" tension rings and about 60% for "glue on" tension rings.. And that is from the people who know how to do it..

Sorry, thought I was clear in my post. My CV4 is being modded by Shannon from MicRehab. I would venture to say he is quite qualified and I'm sure has the proper tools. Check him out (https://www.facebook.com/Micrehab). He's a super cool dude.

Shannon Rhoades Shannon sputters his own capsules. So, the Chinese capsule is completely replaced. Shannon is Blackbird Studios' (click the banner ad) go-to mic guy. Before that he was the lead tech at Miktek and before that he worked at Korby with his brother Tracy. Shannon didn't create the capsule for Miktek, but being the lead guy there, knew that it was a quality mic to begin with. A great platform for a capsule mod...and these aren't standard capsule mods. Shannon has proprietary processes that he does with both the backplate and the capsule. Patents are pending. Yes - you can buy a capsule from Thiersch or Tim Campbell and they will sound great...no question about it. But Shannon's focus has been to make a capsule that absolutely can transform a $1000 mic into something really, really special. No one is saying that it is going to beat out a $20k 251, or walk on water, or be the next fucking Pope, but I will say - from personal experience - it is a very worthwhile investment. I have owned mics in the $3-5000 range that STILL just had SOMETHING wrong with them - still had that Chinese zing...that kind of metallic overtone when you really pushed them. They wouldn't stay consistent in the frequency range when you pushed them - and just didn't seem consistent. Shannon's capsule mod on the CV4 absolutely gets rid of it...And it can be done on any mic. Would I send in my 1951 VF14 U47 for Shannon to replace the capsule? John McBride is doing it on a regular basis with his mics (To put it in perspective, BB has 18 U47's, 18 U67's and 24 251's) ...That's how much he believes in Shannon's ability. YMMV

Did you say Shannon is putting his own capsules into vintage U47s?
P.S. Shannon, check your messages!

I don't think they're wholesale replacing capsules over there - but on ones that were beyond help, yes...but you'll have to ask Shannon...I don't want to put words in his mouth, though...I'm sure he will be on to comment...

I had a expiration on the stickies. I can re-sticky them though. They bump to the top when you post in them.

Whatzzzzzz UP. Sorry been finishing up a Elam.. The pics in the first of this thread all contain 5 micron mylar, The only pic of the new 3micron would be the one without the center hole yet.
Svart is right you have many many many factors with a capsule, the tension that is used on any mic has to be applied equally concentrically with out any error, like he mentioned it can cuz shitty sounding mics and more. As simple as the weakest link, the diaghpriam can collapse from a bad stretch, provoke gold wear. A bad stretch (uneven) is like stored energy something is gonna give sometime. Or even the mass of the gold depending, ( the weight ) of application..
As far as putting my own Capsule in U47 or ...no Its my refurb and reskin, tweak, but I keep everything OG and you cant even tell i touch it other that than the bling on the gold. ( Tracy was and is huge on detail ) I made my first backplate in 1992 by hand, It took 2.5 hours to drill the holes. i am making my own but only for special builds
I been blessed to hear so many stellar dream mics.. Its kewl to see the smile or hear someone that has a mod or whatever done. to hear them sing with confidence, brag , and sound better and crazy talk here but even SMILE..really is good SHIT lmfao They cant afford the $20,000 U47 but now they sound like they at least in the same league. for only $2300- $2000.
...I sputter gold and Nickel daily and use 3 and 1 micron mylar Back to work
