JK, I have no idea how to use that file. My fav L-R settings are about -2dB gain reduction and parallel mix of about 60% Wet/Dry.

Just download the file, move it to Library-Application Support-Universal Audio-presets-Manley variable mu folder then it should show up in presets...or just download it, click on "Load" on your Vari-mu plugin and go to your download folder and choose it.

Basically turns the left side to Mid and right side to Side...and you can dial in the output to taste - more mid or more side. I usually use the input knobs to knock off about -2db of transients.

I used to try and use some of the widener plugs...but could never get happy. When I close my eyes with this thing, it seems to bring the center snare hits more to the front while making the stereo field of the sides wider.

I also have used Nomad Factory's Cosmos with good results. But I never tried UAD Manley Vari-Mu in M/S. Gotta try it. BTW, the Vari-Mu is often an enhancement to whatever I'm doing on the 2bus, but not always. Gotta set the gain, close your eyes and flick/click the bypass until you don't know if it's on or off. Then listen blind.

Totally what I do too. More often than not I choose with the vari mu. But it’s really dependent on the song. I should really do more blind listening.

I never use the MP anymore, but would enjoy having the option to use the Vari-Mu plug. I sometimes find different compressors work better on different tracks. Believe it or not, of the dozen or so compressor plug-ins I have, the Logic DBX 160 works better than all of them on the 2 bus, including Slate, Waves and UAD!
