Modified Federal clone. Has variable attack, release, threshold, and ratio that the original doesn't. 5 knobs vs 1. Apparently if you have the 4 new knobs in the neutral position, it works the same way as the old Federal version. Seems like a nifty box. I grabbed my used from a guy that I know. He really dug it, but is clearing out some stuff in his studio before he hits the road for another tour.

I'm trying, but these deals are going to catch up with me. Got a Mesa Mark iia, Retro Doublewide, and Schmidlin Fed+ all incoming and nothing going out yet. Can't afford to keep everything!

Interesting, however it gets rid of the original tubes, which were a good source of the sound.. So it's not quite a clone.

I thought I was using an old metaphor in a very polite way, and was doing so in humor. JC is pretty excited about this, and he should be! Let's not ruin it for him before he's even had a chance to fall in love... or not, and sell it to me at a bargain. LOL

Got this racked and fired up last night and on first listen, I'm really impressed. Took a mix that I'm working on and created duplicates of the original vocal so that I had 4 tracks of the original lead vocal. Ran one clean, one through this guy, one through the Doublewide, and one through the Brute. This was my favorite of the bunch for this particular vocal track. I was utterly surprised. I was expecting this to just be a smash box for hammering a room mic or something, but it felt really nice on this vocal. So far the only downfall with it is the size. The box looked like a two space unit in the pictures, but the faceplate is extended a bit on the top and bottom, I assume to leave some space for airflow. Also, this extension, seems to make it so that you actually need to use 4 spaces with a half space gap on top and bottom from the rest of your racked equipment. See attached pic...

Greetings folks. Tossing this lille bugger around. Curious on further impressions. I'm under the impression that I'm the only one here who has used one, and I haven't actually put much time in with it. I used it on a couple lead vocals and really dug the results. It is pretty grabby and seems a bit erratic, but the tone is nice. On the vocals that I used it on, it seemed to add a bit of heft. My Brute seemed to pinch the vocal while the Schmidlin thickened and wrangled. Unfortunately, I just sold it, because it was taking up too much of my rack space and I felt like the Doublewide was getting me in the ballpark. My rack only has 2 holes per space and the way the panel is drilled, the holes end up in the middle. Because of this, it was taking up 4 spaces in my rack and I just don't have the room. If you have evenly spaced holes in your rack, ie 3 per space, it will fit in 3 spaces. Sorry to ramble. Anyway, cool comp that I could see myself adding back to the rack when I have more space and money.
