Beyer mc930’s for me. Threw them up for the hell of it one day and they are never coming off.

I exclusively use ATM25's on toms. I bought a bunch of them 10+years ago before they started commanding crazy prices. I guess now they could be considered high-end based on price alone! Are you aware that ATM25's are still available brand new from Japan and always have been? They were never actually discontinued but for some reason AT stopped exporting them outside of Japan. There's plenty of new ATM25's on eBay being sold by Japanese music retailers but only out of Japan. I can vouch they are the genuine article as I bought one about 2 years ago and so did a friend after he initially didn't believe they were still available. You can get a new ATM25 from Japan for around $240 USD plus shipping. I've never used them, but did just look them up - $245 from Amazon.

The M177 are cardioid only Really like my e22s on toms, but only have one at the moment. 414 or CAD M177 usually go on the other tom for me. I've used U87s when they aren't mine What's the diff between CAD177 and CAD 179 ?

Not clear where the line is for high end; but I just did a session with a 906 on the rack Tom, and D112 on the floor Tom, and was very pleased. The kit in question can sometimes have a fussy floor, but the d112 especially performed well!
906 was also a delight. Tried it on a whim, but was pleased.

RE-38's! That's about as high end as you get in a dynamic with a voice coil. Maybe more expensive new than a 441.

Let us discuss the merits of middle end gear. Is that upper middle or lower middle?

Let us discuss the merits of middle end gear. Is that upper middle or lower middle? Mostly middling middle if looked at with sqinty eyes.

I would really like to try high-end mic to my toms sometime. I have always recorded with cheap Audix D4 and Shure SM7 mics on toms. But they have gone through high end pre / eq and always delivered. Would be nice to hear if there is a big difference in the final result with U47 Fet or U87 etc on toms. I usually pick the tom sound from Coles 4038 and Korby U67 from OH and blend in Audix D4 for more body. Maybe one day i will try high end on Toms 😊
