I agree that anything stupid that can be done with one hand, can be done with both hands. As a former part-time racer, it's about concentration and knowing how your vehicle performs in all situations. Most people don't or won't know the second part, but the first part is what is ruined by cell phones. It's not that she's holding the phone, it's that she's concentrating on the conversation, dialing, or texting.
Texting while driving has become illegal in my state, with talks of making it illegal to talk without a headset too.

Texting is illegal in MA. but everyone does it anyway! It's also illegal for drivers 18 and under to talk on a cell while driving. Hands free is legal I believe.

Around here, hands free phone systems are legal to use while driving, everything else not. Not only you get a ticket, if you get involved in an accident with a phone in your hand, you pretty much lose your insurance and are automatically assumed being guilty for a destinct percentage. This can pretty much ruin you, financially....

That's absolutely true, Levon, unfortunately! I guess, most people really simply aren't aware of the possible consequences, pure ignorance. All people i know who have to drive alot professionally use hands-free sets only...

All people i know who have to drive alot professionally use hands-free sets only... That's right, although even hands-free calling is distracting for the driver. I hate it when I have to think for 2 because the other person in the other car is busy yapping with friends and not watching the road, or me for that matter...

I worked with the Metropole Orch in Hilversum a few yrs ago and already then heard about the strict regulations. Also got the feeling that most people had accepted the idea behing it which is perhaps more important than the law itself. I remember thinking that in the land of coffee shops and the red light district - which I believe is pretty far out for most swedish people - this thing was surprising, and very sensible.

This topic gets my blood boiling. I've been riding motorcycles - successfully - ( meaning I haven't been killed yet ) for almost 40years. Early on, I learned to watch for other drivers' eyes, to see where they're looking and anticipate their next move. Always carried that over to being on four wheels as well. It's not as difficult as it sounds, if you get used to it. \ In my day to day gig, I'm driving at least four hours a day. Lately, I'd guess, probably 75% of drivers I pass are looking down at a device. I would guarantee that, not only are some texting, but a lot are browsing the internet and even watching shows/movies. You would not believe how many close calls I see every day - cars swerving, slamming on brakes at the last minute. And don't talk about the people who hold up traffic because they are watching their device at a stop light and fail to see the light turn green.
