I'm kinda surprised there's no love for AWTAC up in here. I have a pair and I'd say they are the "sweetest" mic pres I've ever used. I love em. I have some nice stuff (UTA, Great River, VP28) and the AWTACS are a very elegant, unique sounding beast. Anybody else got em/use em/love em?

There's so much info on the AWTAC website and it's written so well that I'd be a fool to try and explain it here but I can say that this piece was exhaustively labored over in its design and it is really beautiful sounding. It's 100% USA made and manufactured and the company seems to really care about their gear. They're really forward thinking with the integration in to modern workflow (it's designed as a channel strip for a modular console in 500 racks) but truly capturing the topology and sound of the 70s gear most of us covet. I'm surprised there isn't MASSIVE love for this stuff over here. Check out www.awtac.com

Never heard of them before. Had to look them up. It looks cool, but overkill for anything I would need, I think.

No doubt it's cool. I'm just saying something like the mixer portion is something I'm sorry to say I'd never use. I'd prefer a 1 space with preamp and EQ.. Personally I don't use a DI input either, I generally go through my tube amp preamp(I put a switch and output in the amp so I could do this in my Bassman, and my JSX has this already..) and then just go into the A/D if the signal is loud enough, or through a preamp if it isn't.. On another note, the yellow film caps are the same ones my Alesis X2 console use in it's CAPS parametric EQ section.. And yes, they do sound good!

For me this unit is about its SOUND! The additional features are cool and I use all of them (I dream about an AWTAC console and I WILL have one eventually) but it's the SOUND of these that I'm in love with. It didn't happen overnight. I could hear that it was a fantastic mic pre right away, but like most high end gear, it took some deeper use to really hear how good it is. It's that last 10% of subtle difference that I had to kind of learn to hear. I work on a deadline all day every day so I'm making fast choices and I NEVER have time (or interest honestly) in A/B comparisons. I'm now finishing up a 4 month tracking odyssey on the new Dead Sara album for Epic and I used the AWTACS extensively on this record. I'm so glad I did. I really got to dig in with them and learn their character. I can easily say these are my favorite SOUNDING mic pre for vocals and guitars and bass and overheads. I did some summing of multi mic guitar setups using AWTACs with VP28s for make up gain also. I'm gonna use aa awtac sidecar for guitar sub mixing/summing during mix. I'm in love with these things. The EQ is fantastic as well. I'm gushing because I really feel like they're incredible. I want people to get a chance to HEAR these things.
