Lots of us have been around for awhile. So, I'd like to hear what you guys were doing in the 80's 90's, 2000's. Where were you living? Were you in a band or solo? Where and how was the song recorded?
Here's a song I wrote 1993 when I was living in Los Angeles, California. It was recorded in a warehouse in the valley. I met a guitar player who knew a bass player who knew a drummer. We did it all in the same day. Recorded to tape. Not sure what kind of tape machine or tape, but I'm sure it was recorded on tape. Recorded on a board. Again, no idea what kind, but I'm sure it wasn't a Neve. LOL!. I was not interested in the art and science of recording at the time and didn't have the time anyway. You can tell there's no room mics for the drums as there's no sustain in the crash hits at all. Pretty naive about music engineering and the music business at the time. I was working a full time job at Xerox Corporation in Century City and writing songs at night. I had no idea what a DeEsser was, but my vocal sure as hell could have used one!
I moved to LA after growing up listening to Jackson Browne, CSNY, The Eagles, Poco , Joni Mitchell and all the singer songwriters I loved who were LA based. I thought LA was a mellow place. Ha! It was overcrowded and decidedly not mellow. Grunge had hit big and River Phoenix had just OD'd outside the Viper Room which was about a half mile from my apartment. The Northridge Earthquake also hit us the next year. Since I'd never been in one before, I was not as freaked as my native Angeleno neighbors who were scared shitless after the first shock. The damn thing shook our entire building and bounced it up and down. I then went to work the next day and the 44 story building I worked in swayed with the aftershocks.
I wrote this about my wife at the time, who was a Little Tornado. It was a wish fulfillment song and she (thankfully) granted my wish a short time later and left. I was taking a songwriting class with Harriet Schock and Nik Venet. Nik turned me on to Charles Bukowski's poetry. Nice people.
