This thread is inspired by ChaseUTB who commented in the "Symphony Mk 1 vs. Apollo 8 (Blackface)" thread that maybe Johnkenn should consider pairing a Crane Song Solaris DAC with his SvartBox DA/AD.
I'm thinking of something similar. I'd like to get rid of my RME UFX while it still has a bit of resale value, and get a DAC/monitor controller to pair with my SvartBox. 2 analog in's are enough for me.
Instead of a Solaris, I'm considering a Grace Design M900, which is a tiny DAC with a volume control. It's no Solaris, but Grace has an excellent reputation, they make one of the top monitor controllers (the M905), and the M900 is supposedly similar quality but barebones with a ton less features.
I would need an interface to digitally connect the SvartBox and the M900, so I've been looking at the MOTU D8, which is a half-rack unit that connects 4 channels of AES/EBU and 4 channels of SPDIF (RCA) via USB. It also has SRC on each channel, which would be great to connect my Kemper digitally (44.1k) even though I record at 96k. And it has compression/eq/reverb effects, which would be great for vocalist monitoring. And it allows the vocalist to create their own mix using any browser on any type of phone or tablet.
I can buy the MOTU D8 and the Grace M900 for much less than what I could sell the UFX for, so saving a pile of money and ending up with a better system sounds attractive. I'd lose a lot of the UFX features, but nothing that I particularly care about.
Of course, I don't know how well any of this works. But what I'm most concerned about are the MOTU USB drivers for W10. I know several guys on here think highly of the MOTU AVB boxes, but I'm not sure if any of them are on Windows. Anybody have comments about the MOTU Windows USB drivers? Good or bad experiences, I'd like to read as many as possible. I've tried going through some of the MOTU threads on GS, but they mostly just devolve into irrelevant bickering.
Thanks for any help!
