I'm currently located in Farfield, CA, about 60 miles north of San Francisco, not exactly in but very close to the wine country. As many of you may have heard we've been having a LOT of wildfires around here in the last few days. The sky is brown and the sun in a dull red disk, so dim you can almost look at it. This afternoon the flames got to within about 5 miles from my house and people not all that far away have been cautioned to prepare to evacuate if given the alarm. Last night I hardly got any sleep listening to the TV news. So far where I am is not directly threatened but if the wind shifts the wrong way........... It's very nerve wracking to say the least - there's no way to fit 3 people and very much stuff into my Prius - a couple of irreplaceable guitars and the good mics is about it. There's no way to get the studio packed up - I'd need about an 18 foot bobtail and about 4 really strong guys to get the Studer and the console loaded up, plus the racks with the outboard and computer, not to mention all the band gear, amps, PA, etc. - and the kicker is that due to the financial crap I've been having to deal with since moving in here there's no insurance as the person in control of the cash flow has not been willing to cough up for studio insurance. I'd just started making some progress on the issue but now it looks like time may have run out.
About all I can do is monitor the reports and hope it doesn't get this far. Dunno what I'll do if it does....
Scary....

I'm sure you've considered it but definitely check out www.musicproinsurance.com/ to get your stuff covered before it's too late. I was able to itemize all of my stuff before our move (it was close to $75K using retail prices) and was able to use my credit card to pay the 1.25% annual premium. it's a total coverage policy, too. Fire, Water, Earthquake, theft, movers, etc. You just gotta itemize the important stuff and take pictures of serial numbers/gear condition before it's too late. So, if something does happen, at the very least, you'll be covered for the most important stuff.

I do have an itermized inventory but no serials or pics right now.

Best of luck there John. As an east-coaster it's hard to understand, but once in Oct I drove from LA up into the mountains through San Bernardino, then back down to Joshua Tree, and was constantly diverted onto new paths because of fires popping up in front of us. From that I get a sense of the speed at which this happens out there.

The fire came close to one of my houses in Irvine. The 241 toll road is still closed causing major traffic problems. But nothing like the fire up North. Numerous fires that are still only 1 - 3% contained. Heart goes out to the loss of life and property. Hope all will be well with you and yours.

I was wondering if any of you guys were in the path but figured if you were you would be way to busy to post. After living through 2 fires, one a neighbor fell asleep with a lit cigarette, the other was well a nut job thought I would look good barbecued, As precious as it seams it's only stuff! It's the living things that matter!

Oh man, I hope you come out of this OK John. I'd look at renting a trailer for the car, get the outboard and precious guitars and mics in it, plus personals. Leave the Studer,

Well, thanks for your concern, but the danger's passed, at least here. I've learned that one of the drawbacks of a Prius, besides the fact that I can't wear my hat while driving, is that they are not trailer friendly as far as I can tell. Plastic bumpers...

Our mazda 3 isn't designed for towing either. You can put a trailer hitch on it, but it's only meant to allow you to mount bikes on the back. Max weight of like 200 or 250 lbs. There's no rear axle to support the weight for these small front-wheel-driven cars. Just independent suspension that ain't meant to hold anything other than the car itself + 3-4 adults.
