Considering what version I should have available for potential visiting Engineers. I use Cubase & Samplitude myself, running a custom ADK computer with Windows 7 Pro installed. I personally record to RADAR 24 and use the RADAR converters via RME Raydat to/from the computer.

If you are thinking of running an older version get 10 or above for ease of opening files. 9 or below uses a different file extension.

Not trying to get philosophical Bob, but isn't all software really rented?

Yes but you can rent Pro Tools month to month. Yes, I wonder though with the new ever changing PT if they will let one rent a legacy authorization, from my days as PT specialist I can see Avid letting you only rent the most current version and the PITA of not having a compatible system. That could turn off a visiting engineer or producer. Just a hypothetical but we both no from the Mind of Avid, really means how difficult can we make this?

PC doesn't have the compatibility issues a Mac has. The other factor is that a visitor probably has a license and can pop in their ilok, log in and install whatever they need.

Kinda depends on your clients, [IE, what they use themselves and what they want to be able to do] but I think 12 is what is most people are using, unless you are at a bigger studio, where chances are good they either, A) Stayed on the old TDM PT8 or 10, or B) they bit the bullet between the eyes, smashing their teeth and upgraded to an HDX rig with 12.

Same as Bob. I would rent. And you always need the latest version. If a client comes with a frozen track (PT12 feature), can you open it with v10 ? But you can always open a Protools 10 session with Protools 12. I remember few years back, I had to reopen a session made with Pro tools 5 on Mac os 9. We opened it with Pro tools 9 on Snow leopard, if I recall correctly. Not one single issue. Impressive.

I don't rent a pro room and expect to use my plugins (not without a bunch of time loss and hassle, which isn't worth it in my world). So opening a session on someone else's system is always a transition.

Pro Tools has always seemed very confusing to me: so many options/versions/upgrade paths/hardware compatibility issues/etc. . I was thinking perhaps the most vanilla version, up to 32 track count, that would allow someone to work here if they decided they wanted to try the rooms. I've had a couple of people toying with the idea of doing a project here and they always ask why no Pro Tools. For tracking, I would have thought the RADAR was ideal, then they could take the Bwavs with them and do whatever they wanted later..

Radar scares most of them, it seems esoteric. Your plan is good, but not on a commercial situation.

I had no idea. But still, I guess very few people do.

You can run Pro Tools on Radar. The new radar Studio is like two machines in one. One side is traditional radar and the other side is a Windows Daw which can run Pro Tools or any other software.

If I choose to track on the stand-alone hard disk recorder, most young musicians are amazed by manually punching-in a couple of notes. If I have a young engineer in, they have no idea what i'm talking about if there's no screen to set the in/out points. "How do you know you won't chop-off the wave form?" Well, you listen to where you want it to go, then hit the buttons right there.
Just get PT12 vanilla, I use it to open old PT7.3.1/PT9.0 sessions regularly, and it comes with 10 & 11 licenses if you need it on an older system.

Ha, that makes me laugh, I could just picture the looks on their faces, lol. I imagine that Keanu Reeves "whoa" look.
