If you were to put together a three-module "channel strip", utililizing at least two CAPI modules, with the third being a compressor, what would you choose? My only requirements are DIY & single-width.
First rack: Mic pre Second rack: EQ Third rack: Dynamics
I like Jeff's latest simpler EQ module.

Probably the VP28 as the preamp, the LC53A for the EQ, and a SSL611DYN or API525/API527 or the Neve 2264ALB for dynamics. I would go for maximum flexibility.

Well, he did say that he wanted to use at least 2 CAPI modules..

(C)API console vibe is the goal. DIY side car. But we're having trouble choosing a DIY dynamics section. I like the idea of channel dynamics. It would be easy if Jeff offered a compressor kit. I've already got my (Neve) side sorted.

Need a 500 series comp?? www.musiclab.com.au/product-info/foote-control-systems-pico-502-mono-vcaYou will never hear anything bad from this guy and most likely will never hear it work unless you push the hell out of it !! A wire with gain control. If you don't want much colour from a comp this 500 series is a jewel. Based on THAT CORP chips VP28>> LC53>> pico 502 Gary

I have 3 of the Pico 502's. They are amazing. You can crush it and not notice a tonal change. Roger just repaired 2 units after a catastrophic failure in my rack (that is my rack had a failure which damaged the units). Great service and a good turn around time. These are for control, not really color. They are amazing on bass and vocals, sounds more like riding a fader then a comp.
If you think you may want one pick them up while you can! He may not be making anymore.

PM ruckus, and ask him for a SPLICE-500. esp. since it has the wet/dry knob for parallel compression-like usage directly in the chain!

It's unfortunate, but that is what happens when everyone wants colors and not a really good tool. I think he only had 100 made, and they took to long to sell. If people want them they should write to him directly, maybe he will do another run if there is enough interest. Now back to a full CAPI channel strip!

I've not had the chance or funds to build the VP28's yet, but they are next on my list. I do however have a Don Classics U76, and for a 500 series compressor it is dangerously close to a full rackmount Rev A 1176. Not too bad to build, and I use it every single day, whether I'm tracking or mixing. I could see using the VP28, EQ, and the U76 on a vocal. I use my U76 when I'm tracking vocals in every session and it really makes them sound nice and big. I'm not a huge fan of using it on acoustic tracks, only because I'm just not a massive fan of FET style compression on acoustics. I prefer something a little more soft.
The U76 is a great piece, I built mine for a total of around $560, and that was with premium style caps and components. Very good deal, and a solid unit.

Re the pico - I've been thinking about a pair for so long how would it go as just a Chanel comp?mostly on synth duty (or a tonelux tx5....) Can the transformer be added later? Back to the question - vp28 >lc53a> la500 jlm

That MPA 575 looks really interesting. Amazing it can fit all that circuitry in there. I was talking about a channel strip using seperate modules, but this really consolidates space.
