For me the STA is a fundamental link of my #1 chain. Glad you are doing it JK. Thinking about getting a 2nd so I can mix though them. I see no reason why killer mixes can't be made with the best outboard on the way in, and the best of the plug world ITB. Of course, YMMV. I was sold on the hybrid approach until very recently. Hi Matt, are sta's stereo linkable? Yes, they are. From the Retro site: Revisions to the original design include; Tube balance can be instantly aligned without test equipment; Uses 6386 tube or a pair of 6BJ6 tubes; Two or more Sta-Levels can be coupled together for stereo, surround or sidechain operation; XLR transformer balanced input and output; IEC Power Connector; Hand matched audiophile-grade coupling capacitors; High quality, custom wound transformers used throughout; Internal component safety cover.I suppose leaving the box to add outboard compression counts are "semi-hybrid", but without using a console, maybe it doesn't count. In any event, I have a long way to go to upskill my mixing ability before the whole ITB/OTB starts to matter. Maybe at some point I will add my Midas F32 and go OTB, but for now I am focusing on the fundamentals.

What changed your opinion of going hybrid? In my case, I have much to learn about PT and the whole plugin thing before I get too concerned about incremental improvements to mix quality that can be had by going OTB. So it's a personal decision to start from the "inside out", so to speak. I am not a PT beginner, but I am finding the "art" of mixing elusive. I think I might have a tin ear, and need to train it by mixing mixing mixing. I don't need to be OTB for this.

The quality of plugs have really, really increased. Do I really want to patch in and re-record that second 1176 taking off 5 db when I could slap on a REALLY good UAD MkII on it? Not really.
