Does anybody know what percentage of commercial releases use tape-either 24 track->2 track, or HD recorded-> 2 track?

Anecdotal accounts from the 2 mastering guys around here who do a lot of international work suggests less than 5%, rare to have tape arrive for a mastering session, rare to hear it's artifacts.

I can account for all the people that use the room I usually work out of (4) and say we all print to an ATR102 1/2" machine and then back in through a Lavry Gold converter. That combination is pretty magical, and leads me to my opinion of tape simulator plugins being a pretty big joke.
I've got no interest in dealing with sending a reel to a mastering engineer.
That A80 is a nice machine, I wouldn't ever just buy 1 though. You'd want to have an extra to scavenge parts from in order to keep the 1 machine in tip top condition. That's just me though.

Only ONE spare machine?

I use to own a large Studer (A820), 'back in the day'... cutting straight from tape to a 45 was great fun, the mastering engineer would light up when i would bring a tape in and blow the dust off his A80 - this was early 2000's, even then he said nobody brought in tape anymore. Anyway, i had multiple problems with the machine and nobody wanted to pay for tape anymore so sadly off it went.. Loved the sound and the little mono speaker on the machine was very handy for mixing. Nowadays i just have a 1/4" A807 around for fun stuff.

Note to anybody sell a tape machine for more than a $1k get a head report! I had a guy trying to interest me in his AG440-8 for $3k, when I told him my rule was I don't spend more than $500 on a deck without a head report he said I was insane and full of shit, boy did he eat his words when I sent him a pic of the bill of sale where I bought my AG 440-8, AG440 1/4 in and 36 console modules for $500!
