Tracker: first blood So once you open the tracker tab, you can either drop in multiple wav files or use the add button. I used add. You only have to load your close mike wav files, not room. It works very quickly to identify what your track is: 4 out of 4 for my first attempt. SD3 defaults to the default kit but you can load anything and it starts playing that kit immediately. You can line up the first beat against the grid line and then set the rest for tempo match: probably a little more niggly than they describe and you can set the threshold of sensitivity to focus each track on the sound you most want and in effect remove the ones you don't. So far so good, oh ya dry wet mix knob so you can have what ever proportion of original to replaced sounds you want too !

Yes, it either recognizes the type by its analysis or you can pick as well.
Early days but I wasn’t certain how subtly it tracked rapid snare hits rolls: stay tuned !
Hi hat is interesting apparently the default is a multi layered library to represent all the different sounds or you can select the sound you want .

I only tracked 4 mikes but you can drag and drop all your kits wav files at once and each is analyzed in term and turned into a separate track by type.

If you Dropbox we some wav files I could load and could run through whatever kits you wanted and upload the sample triggered files for you ?

Augmenting real drums with these samples has proven inferior to BFD for me. And I don't mean using the Tracker function, which seems to be a waste of space with a DAW like Cubase or Logic that has the built in capability--maybe it's able to track better if you're going for complete replacement or something--certainly open to that, I just don't do it. My typical use is to fill in kit mic blanks--always room mics, but often also like a kick out mic, which no one records and I find necessary to allow a kick to speak in a natural way. Anyway--I was excited that they used both the 47FET AND a sub kick for all the kicks....and with like 12 different room mics....it seemed like it would be the ultimate for this purpose. ....not so much in practice. When I just solo the client's kick in mic and the BFD out mic, they sound like a single drum.....with these it sounds like reverb and woofer wobble. Yes--even muting the sub and rooms. If I need to beef up a snare, I'll add the snare bottom--again, this being the crazy custom stereo mic kit made for it, it adds such a nice bloom to the SD3 top sample, but with a real top track? It sounds like another sound of just kind of snares rattling.... I even loaded the rest of the whole 240gb so I could try the OTHER room mics. A)the AmbRibbon and AmbMid, which are in the original pack sound best....and that mid is UUgge, in terms of time--unless you need a side stick on a 90s R&B ballad (oh and I do sometimes! ) --the rest of the room mics are not terribly useful for augmentation. I EVEN called up a client track I mixed a lot of years ago, who I remembered had recorded very dry in his house....and ALSO was shall we say "Hair metal" which is IMO--what Superior does best traditionally.....nope. BFD owned it. So, while these are a LOVELY sample set, once you deprogram the shit overhead balances....for doing fake drums. Not so much for sample augmentation in mixing real kits recorded at home.

So far I am just using the first 2 downloads, very impressed with sound quality, but I am so used to using logic drummer that I don't like all the niggling around: guess I lam azy !

I think they sound amazing. I have all the audio of the (fake) drums printed for my new EP of the Logic Drummer PLAYING SD3 samples. That's why I posted what I just did--it's so odd how bad the sample augmentation of real drums worked out. I think most people REPLACE drums, so maybe that will work better. I just have no interest in doing that for a number of reasons.

Really wish there was a way to import a track to the tracker and then bounce it as a stereo wav...without creating every track separate. For replacement duties. Had a sidestick I wanted to replace...lots of good options in SD3, but...

You can import the stereo sub mix and set tracker to pull the part you want and then export that ?
It might be midi but you could convert to audio or set the instrument you want in your daw sd3 instance?

Man. I've been playing with this for a few weeks now and I'm ready to make my personal call. This shit is amazing.
I'm not using the stock SD3 sounds a bunch. They're very real sounding and I may get to know them more and start using them. I wish they didn't all sound so giant room-y. But so far I'm almost exclusively using the Indiependent SDX. But whether I'm playing the V Drums or taking real drums I've done and using Tracker to add SD3, this thing is blowing my hair back, big time.
The way you can sit there and choose what you want going into what mics. Absolutely amazing. This is gonna be a big deal for my tunes.

ya these do sound good , presence and tone but not big big like sd3! They’re lovely. With my SD3 stock sounds comment, it’s not that the sounds themselves are too big (indeed the Indiependent stuff is beefier outta the gate than the Massenburg stuff) it’s just that stock SD3 stuff all has huge reverb tails from the huge room. I’m gonna dig into it more but I’ve just been so happy with the Indiependent stuff I haven yet. The ambience mics on the Indiependent are in such a nice sounding, medium sized room. Super useful. And indeed I’ve been in that room many times and it’s awesome.

The Indie SDX is right in the wheelhouse of what I like. Fat, dry drums in a nice medium sized room. They've got more inherent color than the Massenburg stuff, which could fit what you want or not. I don't think they were shy with that A-Range desk and the outboard gear. But yeah, the stuff is super nice. I'll mess more with the Massenburg stuff too. I'm absolutely sold on SD3 as a thing. It's gonna be my path going forward. I hope they do some more expansion packs that aren't hard rock/metal. I bet they will. There's huge demand for dry-er, vibey drums out there. That Bob Rock thing has a couple kits that sound really excellent. I may buy it just for those.

I love the Roundbadge kit, but it kinda has a gated sound to it. Think it’s that Mid room. Need to trade that out for the far room.

Speaking as a drummer I have to say I'm blown away with SD3.
I have a large Drum Tec E Kit I use to play my drums in (although personally I monitor my Roland module when tracking)
Then I'm triggering SD3 with the resulting MIDI file.
For me SD3 is simply "real drums" ITB .... feels like Kemper for drums - so to speak.
The drums themselves are so beautifully recorded and the big room sounds are great for compressing and triggering off the snare if I want a big rock sound. Or allowing them to float a bit for a jazzier natural sound.
These drums can be sculpted to anything I can imagine - I think they're stunning.
If I don't want "real drums" and the track needs something drier and more artificial then BFD3 or Maschine/Battery/Stylus RMX work great.
I'm really blown away with SD3.
Combined with Keyscape and Omnisphere 2 for keyboards then real guitar and real bass, these VI's are holding there own against real instruments.
Amazing stuff - a great time to be making music ITB :-)

Wish I could figure out a quicker way to program ghost notes than drawing them in...it's my one complaint with playing with pads/hands instead of sticks. Plus - not being a real drummer, I only have so many "licks" so to speak. I guess I need to start really listening to drum fills and what guys do with hats and cymbals.

And unlike the Kemper, which is in its own right great, instead of simulating drums to a realistic degree, this is just the actual audio of the recorded kits. Keyscape is a purchase for me within the next couple weeks. And then I've got my small, dead studio with my ISO cab/re-amp situation for electric gtr and bass. I feel like I can do anything in here now. Really something.

Nice Ragan, very much in the pocket and suits/serve the song in an understated way.
