Looks like junk but sounds great.
Steel for the plate was cut from the back of an old filing cabinet.
Mixer looks like something you would find in a dumpster.
But what the heck, sounds better the most 'proper' DIY plate reverbs I've heard.

Mixer housing looks like a cake baking tin. The guy sounds like a Kiwi.

A number of things I noticed were...
1. The plate itself is not highly tensioned 2. Being cut from an office filing cabinet it is painted which will likely dampen the high end 3. The driver (speaker) is not physically contacting the plate 4. Not sure if/how the piezo's are buffered?

Plates can definitely be over-tensioned. The nature of a plate is not to really have high end anyway, but yes, the paint is probably a damping factor. Multiple DIY reports of speakers simply placed close to a plate rather than driving directly. Drums near my plate will generate a recordable signal, simple vibration. Piezo's can go into any hi-Z preamp, like a DI input with gain. Simple FET follow by some sort of gain amp.

Any type of driver that is mounted directly to the plate will obviously dampen it to some extent. Contact drivers are often suggested by some DIY'ers but will reduce the ability of the plate to vibrate freely. Even the original EMT driver is not going to match a typical full range speaker's response with the EMT driver effectively having a speaker 'cone' made from a 20lb sheet of steel. Of course this requires some form of equalisation. A potential issue using a free mounted speaker driver is possibly more audible noise eminating from the speaker than an EMT driver but I wouldn't expect a great difference. High impedance buffers (5 to 10 megs) located right at the piezos themselves are better for reduced noise and best frequency response.

So , stupid question time.. two piezo elements placed apart on the single plate...faux stereo, or two plates...?
cheers

If anybody is interested in one of the Soliddrive drivers my Neighbor and freind works for one of the Companies other divisions, So I can get you a deal I have one hear to play with😁

Actually I think utilising extra piezos and then sub-mixing down to stereo is an interesting idea as it theoretically should make for a more complex and richer effect. The piezos mounted at the long ends of the plate produced the widest stereo effect. The side mounted piezos sounded not as wide from what I could tell from the clip.

Whether this is a negative or not would require comparisons but I'm inclined to think either the original EMT style driver or even a closely mounted speaker may be better sound wise.

I mentioned that and they said some guy had the Soliddrive clamped to the frame! Mine is on a wall where I have had noisy neighbors, great for 6 AM revenge!
