I got a card in the mail for a "free" hearing evaluation and decided to have a go at it, being curious what the results would be. Now, at 58 years old and spending over thirty years in Construction Industry, as well as playing in some loud bands back in the day, I expected to be told I have some loss. I also have some tinnitus, more of a white-noise whooshing sound that becomes more obvious in quieter environments. So they told me that I'm 40% down in the region between 4K to 8K, which makes sense if for nothing else, age, although 40% seems a bit more than one would expect. Left ear was down slightly more than the right. I've never felt that my listening to music has suffered in any way and I enjoy a wide range of music, including Classical. My mixing skills suffer only because I can't devote enough time to the art. But now I'm wondering if this drop in my frequency range would prevent me from ever learning to mix well, unless I can correct it with hearing aids. The new Digital aids can be tuned to each individual's needs, I guess much like room-correction software. My gut-reaction / Ego tells me that I don't need any artificial help and that I can learn to compensate. However, I am wondering if anyone here has gone through a similar experience and what did you decide? The woman doing the evaluation seemed to do a thorough job and her advice made sense, but I am somewhat skeptical as she has a vested interest in selling hearing aids.

I don't know about hearing aids but I don't think you don't have to worry too much about this.
Hearing loss is a very progressive and slow so our brain "compensate" it. I'm sure I've lost some highs from 20 years ago but my mixing skills are far better than then.
Different animal is hearing loss due to traumatic experience so brain is not that fast to cheat us trying to tell us we hear the same.
