I recently got a couple of WE111C and UTC A21 and they now live in my console's master output. Individual bypass for each transformer so I can route mono tracks through patchbay as well.

Useful to put some load switches on too for a slightly different sound. Clip some in for a listen if you haven't.

I'm still playing around with gain staging. UTC has less headroom (+15dBm) but has more "color" than WE so I prefer to drive them softly. When switching on WE I can drive them pretty hard and still sound subtle.

Very interesting! I have a few sets of random transformers sitting around and I've been thinking about doing something just like this. Do you have schematics or any any info you could share?

I had a bunch of Trimax transformers years ago that I sold off cheap. In hindsight I should have probably kept them.

I just wired 1:1 balanced to balanced. No schematics, just followed pinout. WE has more headroom so wired first from XLR input then goes to UTC. I'm about to receive some Neumann, Telefunken and Malotke iron and I'm studying some options: - passive transformer stereo box with bypass for each tx - adding API/NEVE/990 drivers with output attenuation for each tx

The utc are only low headroom if you put 20Hz through them. Headroom rises with frequency, 6dB/oct. My bad, I'd say lower headroom than WE (+15 vs +30)

I just remember that I have a pair of Trimax tube amplifiers under the house! I'm gonna drag them out!
