Yesterday, I found out that the New York City car murderer, Richard Rojas, killed a friend of mine's relative - Alyssa Elsman - and critically wounded her 13 year old sister Ava Elsman along with injuring 21 other people.
I went on YouTube to watch some video- and after watching reports of the details- I (unfortunately) read some of the comments. I could not believe what I was reading. From people calling it "fake news" to people trying to politicize it to people calling the girls whores etc. etc.
I was stunned by the sick minds of so many people and how social media has opened up this stream of filth with no filters. This was a real person who died along with real people who were wounded, but so many of these people were focused on everything else but the actual tragedy to these real people and their family and friends.
I worry that this outpouring of crap could make things even worse as people, emotionally detached from actual events, fearlessly spout every ugly thought that comes into their minds. I wonder how this ugly genie can be put back in the bottle and think there is nothing good in these streams of unfiltered crap.
I know this is a music forum, but yesterday was a very bad day and I just pray that good can overcome what seems to be an increasingly evil world. I commend everybody here where we have a good community. We restrain our emotions and stick to constructive ideas. Even when there is conflict it is mostly worked out through patience and reason. There's a lot of good in the internet, but there's a lot of bad too. I don't have any answers, but something felt wrong to me. So, I put it out there. It really hits home when the tragedy is personal.
-Rant over
RIP Alyssa Prayers for Ava and her family and all the victims and their families.

Sorry to hear that you have been touched by this tragedy. Unfortunately technology has given every asshole in this a platform for his or her a worldwide unedited platform. For their agenda. There was a time when the platform was the simple letters to the editor. While these letters were censored and primarily local , even then an occasional sensational asshat got through. Having been helplessly on the receiving end of the old version I feel the pain, all you can do is remember these Trolls are out numbered by those who only wish to help and comfort.

My condolences for your friend's relative.
What can we do about the way people behave in matters like this? Write a song. Maybe it will reach some people and make them think before they say thougthtless, hurtful things;..

Some of the greatest songs ever written were about political or social issues, about change and the good for all. I fear those days are over.

From people calling it "fake news" to people trying to politicize it to people calling the girls whores etc. etc. YouTube comments are terrible and always have been. Some things to consider: Due to the huge reach/audience and lack of moderation, it's also a prime target for individuals (trolls, griefers, content creators that benefit from stirring controversy, etc) and organizations (political parties/campaigns, CTR, Stormfront, etc) who are invested in pushing the idea that a larger segment of the population maintains certain beliefs that aren't actually that widespread. As such, millions of YouTube comment posters aren't actually real people in a meaningful sense...they post via automation, or are centrally controlled via custom dashboards. If you want some enlightenment on the subject, do a search for "buy social media accounts" and take a look at what you find. In short, I'm saying YouTube comments have been a cancer on the internet for many years, and I wouldn't put too much emotional investment in them, due to the above factors.

Oh they're not over... but instead of Poverty, Injustice, Mass Murder, Terrorism, Child labor, Slavery and the like being sung about... It's non-binary trans-genderism, Funding for PP, Trump's orange glow, and killing all traditional values.

If I could get off of social media, I would. It's a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

Yeah that's supposedly a quote from Hunter S. Thompson about the music industry, but no one is really sure who first came up with it. Hilarious and true
