Sorry for the sidebar, but what is the "inner tube" mod. I'm familiar with the Max mod, and it is superb.
Stam's 87 sounded really great on the files I've heard. That gives me confidence he'll find the right tweaks to get the most out of his 47.

As one of the pre order dudes...I thought it might be relevant for me to comment.
The biggest disappointment about this, is I still have not received any formal notice at all about any of this. Had I not read it on the purple site, I would be expecting the mic to turn up in November. Which is the last date I was given via email after I asked.
Now I paid months ago, 200 USD. I honestly feel a little pissed off about it. The price jump from 790 to 1290 is almost double. Again, I have had no notice at all, It was said that a email was going out last week, nothing here...
Now, I own two other pieces of STAM gear, a SA2A and a SA4000 and I also have a pre order on the SA76. I have been very patient and supportive during all delays, cause I eventually got what I preordered at the price I pre ordered.
This time though, it really is almost a bait and switch in some ways.
At 790 I was happy to roll the dice, support Josh and his company, as I already have a fantastic vocal mic in my old U87. At 1290 with no communication whatsoever, I just feel like my early adopter support for the company is not regarded highly at all.

I have the Max Mod for the U87ai which gives me the U67 and a linear mode which is similar to the inner tube I believe, Pretty different actually. Think C12 and U47 had a baby. Worth trying out. The max mod, inner tube mod, and stock 87 would cover about any possible need IMO. I tried to get a max mod for my vintage 87, but he couldn't get it to sound right on the vintage model. Ended up with a 269 from RMS - great mic. But the 87 with all 3 options would be killer.

Max took a note from his playbook when he made his mod "instantly" changeable with a quick insert. But sonically, very different beasts.

Innertube is far older than that. I read a review in Mix in the mid to late '90's.

How much did the Innertube cost? It doesn't say on their site.
The mods still put the mics in a $2,500-$3,000 range. You could get two Stam 47's for that and still go out for a fancy dinner.

Here's the email I got. Dear Clients, I have some important news about your SA-47 order. First, I would like to apologize for the 3-month delay on your order. I appreciate your business and sincerely we are doing our best to serve you more efficiently on any future orders. Unfortunately, after several months of sourcing tubes and due to inconsistency and unreliability of the supply that I managed to purchase (most presented noise, gain problems or developed it within 48 hours) the SA-47 dual pentode tube project has been cancelled. It take full responsibility for this. My hope was in finding enough good sounding tubes that would allow us to use a budget efficient output transformer and capsule allowing to bring the cost down of this microphone but I failed. Everybody who pre-ordered will be entitle to a full refund starting today and-or moving their original order to the new SA47EF which I will explain below. In order to obtain a refund kindly send an email to stamaudio@gmail.com with the word “Refund” on the subject line, kindly add your PayPal email on the content. As an alternative to the original project we have developed an amazing sounding mic with a single Telefunken EF-800 (an original idea from Oliver Archut) as a replacement. After several months of testing capsules, transformers and tubes hoping to find the best possible sounding combination, we can say we are extremely happy with the results..We have tested the mic Vs several original Neuman’s U47 and every time we had a hard time picking which mic was ours and which was the original (video available below!). ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif Eventually, we settled on significantly more expensive components to be able to achieve the sound of an original U47 and felt we would either make it right or not build it at all. Featuring a Canadian handmade capsule by Dany Bouchard (the D7), a Telefunken-Siemens EF800 NOS tube and an American AMI BV8 output transformer by AMI. This translates in over 1.000 USD in cost. The new SA47EF will start shipping in December, we have purchased all parts and they will be on their way soon. We only have a limited supply of these NOS tubes and this mic will probably be the first and only batch. With all of this said, here are the new prices and 3 possible solutions that occurred to me. I have tried to be as fair as possible. Stock price: 1,590 USD Pre-order price: 1,390 USD Pre-order special price, 1,290 USD For all of you who keep your order I will also be providing a 100-dollar discount on all future orders from us. (SA87 for 790 or SA47FET for 690) I sincerely apologize for the long wait and the change of plans and I hope you are happy with the mic we have developed. Thank you

That said, where are you going to find a U47 clone that comes this close for this pricing? A few people have already said that a DIY build like this would still cost 2k. No no, this exact build would cost you around $1K DIY. It's good to hype things up and recognise a good deal, but being realistic, there probably isn't a single microphone currently available that uses $2'000 or more worth of parts. Even the $10K mics don't cost that much in parts. But where you are saving money compared to other commercial products, is by buying direct. If he was selling through a dealer, his price would easily be $2'200. You save a cool 30% right there. On top of that, Stam's margins aren't big, and he definitely needs to get credit for that. Any extra revenue here can't really be counted as profit, it's pretty much labour only. These things take a good bit of time to put together and test. And just as a counterpoint...him not selling through a dealer is what's responsible for 90% of his issues.

I am very interested in knowing more about the U87ai max mod and innertube mod? I can’t seem to find any info on the max mod? There's a bunch of MaxMod info. Try the "U67 style microphone" thread here or RGO or look at the MaxMod thread on GS.
