Well.. Instead of "engineers and mastering houses conspire to make bad sound", I'd rather say "the author makes circular logic, attempting to *explain* his opinion as fact, and using those *facts* as the supporting argument for his opinion".
Times change. Ears change. People change. Music changes. There is no right or wrong in music or music production, there is only popular and unpopular.
Seems like he just doesn't like the way things are these days and wants to make a "scientific" rationale for it using an appeal to power argument.. AKA "see? Science PROVES I'm right!"

This is ridiculous. His next project is possibly making Picasso's "Guernica" look *scientifically* more "natural" and "better" by re-equalizing the missing colors back in Photoshop. (EDIT: And of course rounding the totally unnatural and unnormal edges!) </paranoia on> And of course - it's a conspiracy. </paranoia off>

I was asked to not participate in the discussion via PM. I've been waiting to form a proper public response, when the time comes. I should probably forget it! The de-mastering curves presented are hilarious, to imagine a mastering guy doing such, well....

He also invokes a sunk-cost fallacy to explain why he can't possibly be wrong when the methodology is questioned. I'm wondering if the thread is some sort of elaborate long running trolling exercise.

Never assume a conspiracy for what can easily be explained by simple, old fashioned incompetence.
Is it not possible that some moron who has never heard of an RIAA curve did an unequalized transfer from vinyl (or a master EQed for vinyl production) to create that bass deficient CD?

This guy needs too 1 spend some time at a mastering facility 2 realize it has to play well on the lowest common denominator 3 understand that if reissues are from the same master it's probably degraded. 4 go back and learn the limitations Vinyl & early digital placed on mastering engineers.

Understand, I'm not saying conspiracies don't exist - they obviously do - but Occam's Razor favors the incompetence hypothesis.
