That's all. Just wanted to rant. I'm sure it's going to be worth it, but it's been 16 weeks and I'm getting anxious. All I have at this point is a photo of the faceplate with the knobs laying on it. :-( Backstory as I'm sure it'll come up -- It's based on the DR-MQ5 / "Igor's Sontec" clone but it'll be all (Elma) switched with some pretty sweet upgrades (power, op-amps, caps, etc.). And those sexy Elma Classic Collet knobs... Oh yeah, those were my idea...

Wow very impressed!
It won't be cheap but it sure will sound great
"based on" means you used Purusha's PCB or did you mod it and use your own boards?
I have an stereo parametric mastering eq under my radar and have 3 options: -barry porter NetEq -dr mq 5 -don classics 250eq
Any pros and cons on these mq5?
Edit: We all need to rant but you'll be pleased when finishing this beast.
It took me 2 years designing and building my THAT4301 compressor but i couldn't be happier. Took me 6 months building my stereo solid state pultec bit man i use it on everything and i can barely remember those days of frustration and slow progress

I understand it's Purusha's board -- Not building it myself... I'm just no good at that sort of stuff and I don't have the time (that said, I don't think the guy building it for me has the time either - BOO Yah!).
I know people with both (DRMQ5, BPNEQ) and both tend to love 'em. Had GML's, had a 250, liked 'em both but never fell in love for some reason. Even my (Crane Song) Ibis ended up on the block at one point. But all switched, mid-side capabilities (Not on everything, but when you need it, there's no substitute) and I negotiated a solid (if not somewhat slow) deal on it.
Can't comment on the DC250... And although the MQ5 is based on the 250, I'm not expecting it to sound like one - and that's fine. Had one - sold it. ;-)
Just looking for a good, clean, full-recall parametric with MS capabilities that's ridiculously quiet. Not having to kick out $8k for a *switched* Ibis makes me feel all warm 'n fuzzy.

If I was the guy who build it for you I'd be very meticulous about my job. Ensuring every wire, switch, resistor, DOA is double or triple checked before moving on. Don't forget about getting the right parts, waiting 2 weeks for Mouser order to arrive, custom fees if required... These things take time, just be patient.
An unfinished project on the bench is a very frustrating feeling for the DIYer. I know that. But you'll forget it when powering up your beast for the first time.

Jaw dropping on every step (Nagra, PYE, Neve, Urei, Studer...)

TRACKING NUMBER!!!!!!!!
31 pounds of fun is officially on the way!
31 pounds... No way the Massive Passive was that heavy... (A MOMENT PASSES) Shipping weight on the Manley Massive Passive: 27 pounds.
I wonder if he put a bottle of Gentleman Jack in there or something....

Still have a stereo "Igor Sontec" project in the drawer, pcbs and pots. But rotary switches are so tempting for this kind of eq....and expensive. And the title of the thread is pretty much the reason it is still in the drawer - i *know* it will take like forever to finish, once i start it....

IT. IS. HERE. Don't know if I can fap to this, but I'll certainly give it the ol' college try... (Mild vape puff added to bring out the ridiculously bright blue LED's on each band) THAT said -- It sounds absolutely amazing. One of those EQ's that's *so* transparent, you hardly notice anything changing. Then you hit the bypass and freak out at how much has changed and then cut everything in half. THAT SAID -- There is a 'hum' in the right side high shelf (thank Jeebus, each band has a bypass that takes it out of the chain). It's at like -85, but I can hear it. And if I can hear it, it needs fixin'. Going to talk to the builder and see if we can't track it down. Otherwise - it's quite nice. Right off the bat, I like it better than my old Sontec, Massenburg 8200 and Manley Massive Passive. Hell, I might even like it more than the Ibis. Back to work... For a bit... Then sleep. Then I spend the whole day exploring this thing in detail.

Now that I had a chance to take proper measurements, I could finally order the "ornaments" -- The left one: Found a place online that does laser-etching in various metals that didn't break the bank.

I think the hum is being handled. Dropped it at a "legendary" tech shop in the Chicago area. Even the receptionist has an idea of what the issue is.
I just wish I was good at this stuff. :-(
That said - If you are, the thing is utterly amazing otherwise. Did some null tests which were mind-bending. And the self-noise (other than when the right side high shelf is engaged of course) is damn near non-existent. Quieter than my 9500, Ibis, 8200, 642b, MassPass, 250 -- "Sweet" and "musical" but not in any way obnoxious. I've only seen a few places that have these on their gear list -- And - well, other than I can't even imagine the patience to build one, I'm starting to wonder why....

Great to hear hum is gone!
Nothing more regarding that using gear you have a nice relation with. Everything sounds better with just a fraction of dB here and there.

Well, not gone just yet -- But I did get a call from the tech and basically it's a simple issue (that requires a bit of time). And that's all good. I'm just glad they figured it out and it's on the mend. I'm tired of looking at the Stereo Stupidifier with Digital Sonic Decrapulator....

What was the issue causing the hum? Does this thing have an internal or external power supply? Linear?

Open filter cap. They're going to replace a bit of power wire with shielded stuff also just in case...
Internal supply -- That was an original concern with the thing in general. But with self-noise at around -115dB --- except for that one shelf --- I might just let that slide for the moment.
