i use a presonus central station. It's a bit fiddly and I wouldn't mind upgrading. like it for the monitor switching, mono option and headphone amp. I don't require the headphone amp as I have extras that could be used.
what does everyone else use and why?

I have a Coleman, TB4 I think? It's rock solid, transparent, and I got it used for a great price. One of the most functional and useful pieces I've ever bought.

i picked up a used Dangerous D-box last month. The unit is killer.. I've also being messing with the summing section in it which also cool as f... D-box in use here, as well. Great D-A, great headphone amps, multi-input select, alt speaker select, mono, talk-back, and 8 channel summing. Everything absolutely top-notch, fidelity-wise. Sure, I could use another 8 channels of summing, but even the 8 channels of summing come in quite handy. Lately, I've been using the summing section as my zero-latency monitoring solution for tracking. I take taps off my patchbay from the various mics (usually just one or two mics and a single musician/vocalist) and a cue mix from the DAW and presto - headphone mix for tracking. The D-box is a very high quality, very versatile unit. Great center piece for a smaller studio.

I have the Sound Skulptor Monitor Controller. Six stereo inputs, four stereo outputs, mute, dim, mono, reverse and a killer headphone amp.

Tascam DS-M7.1 Very slick remote controller with NO audio lines cluttering the desk.
Mandatory for me - detented and easily recalled, calibrated monitor levels.
AES in, Analog out from mono to 7.1. Any speaker easily mutable or solo-able.
Delays on all lines for easy room tuning. Beautiful fold down options. Great D/A.
Only up to 96k though, but that's OK for me. Hard to find these days. And stands a good chance of needing to be recapped.

Drawmer MC2.1. Features are great, with a nice big volume control knob. I do wonder how much it's coloring the sound, though. Most of the reviews seem to suggest it's fairly transparent. I think though that I may have to jump up significantly in price to get something better.

I use the Satori, amazing box. Any idea what the thinking was behind the first inputs being XLR, 2-4 TRS and 5-8 Dsub?

Any one use the Mammoth Cave audio controllers? I'm almost tempted to buy one just because they look so cool.

Tim seemed like a cool dude with strong values and he was passionate about his work. I like supporting companies like that. I was really rooting for his company.

Flexible routing + pristine DA. Best in its price range if not the best monitor controller.

I supported Tim by buying this from his first batch when he was painting them on his back porch. What took him under was when he offered a tube setting and didn't charge previous owners for the upgrade. It involved changing the case and adding the tube and parts, basically getting a new unit and leaving him with a pile of old cases. Also too many products with too many options.

I use the Satori, amazing box. Any idea what the thinking was behind the first inputs being XLR, 2-4 TRS and 5-8 Dsub? Basically all inputs are stereo inputs... The first 4 inputs allow you to hook up your D/A or anything else in stereo you'd want to switch through. Inputs 5-8 is 4 stereo inputs via d-sub that feed the summing section. Also, you can monitor just your summing inputs in comparison with your buss input to quickly see if you've got too much compression, eq, saturation etc. going on the buss. It also has 4 separate HP outs that can be assigned different inputs. This box is packed full of features that are incredibly useful. Best buy I've made all year.

I have one (passive monitor controller) and love it Tim seemed like a good guy.

On the very low end, Mackie has just come out with the "Big Knob Passive" which is only $69.99 US. 2 sources, two sets of monitor outs, volume knob, mono, mute and dim. That's it, no summing or conversion etc., and it does not look fancy. I think I'm justifying the purchase just for the mono button.
