Things to consider:
- I am not using an HD interface. It's all Apogee via a Thunderbridge - Symphony MK1 (8x24) plus an DA16x (8 outs connected) used for effects sends. I'm limited to 32 outs anyway by Core audio, and I have no plans to expand beyond one SSL Sigma (too expensive). So 32 I/O it is. - I run sessions at 48K, so there are always plenty of audio tracks (128 max) to get lost in. I would like to move to 96K, but not without changing out my i7 Mac Mini. But PT 12 would still offer enough (64 max) at 96K to get into trouble with. - PT 12 native has much of the functionality previously held by HD - expanded metering, disc cache, etc. These are the things that got me to buy HD in the first place. - PT 12 native does lack a few things: punch and some advanced editing features. Loss of this functionality does not seem a big thing to me based on how I work.
The main thing driving me to think about this is that I want to return to fader-based mixing using one Artist Mix in my lap at the monitor sweet spot (7 feet away)and begin utilizing Avid Pro Tools Control on my iPad to handle track editing, also at the sweet spot. I am tired of sitting two feet from 27" screens while the mix blows by my ears out into the room. And what do you know, Control integrates best with PT 12, it's effectively a requirement to be at PT 12.6 and Eucon 3.5 to get the full effect of the app. Imagine that!
My friends, I am inclined to surrender my HD license. It hurts to do it, but seems to make sense. My question to all of you is: am I missing anything? Am I somehow screwing myself if I proceed?

If your not using HD hardware, your HD Lic is being used as PT Software anyway so go for it !

I'm actually considering going down to 48k to increase performance, add more I/O, and reduce hd space. Was curious what sample rates others were using. I'm at a crossroad where I can't add anymore outs without going down or doing a massive overhaul of my computer and interface. I wonder what DrBill is using. I know he's using more and hd inserts.

I drew the line at 96k cause i didn't want any problems transferring files. That said i never had an issue to begin with and i doubt it would be much of a difference if i did have to down sample something. With all the tools in the world at our fingertips it hardly seems to matter. Your rig is perfect if you ask me. I have yet to need 32 analog tracks in out (as i bus digital in the daw). After designing the mixer i went back to my console and examined my 24 in out workflow. I reevaluated my needs then proceeded to do some rewiring digitally and in the analog domain. After a bit of work (and a little cheating) i found that 9-14 tracks actually works well. I bus everything in the daw these days anyways. Drums get bussed usually to 1 and 2 but i have put the overheads and snare on a seperate track(3-4 if needed). Guitars and bass own tracks 3-7 (or 5-9) Vox and back up vox 8-10 (10-12). Keys or synths (in my bands case accordion and violins) are on 11 and 12 (13-14 if needed).
Of course this could all be bussed even further. I'm getting all David Thoreau i guess. I blame Walden.
