Lee Hazen passed away 3/11/17, according to the Ampex List. Lee worked as a live sound guy in the early '60's, running sound for the Beach Boys at Florida gigs. Recorded 'The Little Black Egg' by The Nightcrawlers which was a minor hit and made the 'Nuggets' early garage/psych compilation LP. Worked with the Allmans before the 'Bros Band' became official. Worked at Criteria in 1965, then moved to King in Cincinnati in 1966 when they were expanding. 1967 led him to Woodland Sound in Nashville. Did 'The Feminine Complex', an all girl Nashville garage rock band in 1969. Worked with Johnny Cash some in the early '70's, also a lot of remote work around Nashville and later opened Studio By The Pond at his house in Hendersonville on the lake, right around the bend from Johnny Cash's place. There he did the early England Dan and John Ford Coley hits. I see his name on a Dan Fogelberg record as well, Dr Hook, Linda Ronstadt, Doc Watson, among others. Neighbor complaints shut his studio down in the mid-80's, and he'd been in a nursing home after a debilitating stroke about 6 years ago. He was originally from my hometown in NC, and had some interesting stories about things before my time. I spent an interesting afternoon with him on the lake around 2003. He probably had 100 different portable tape machines spread all around the house. No immediate family apparently. RIP.

Sad when one of our forebears passes away. Not well known, but clearly still did great work.

I just recalled how I came into contact with Lee: he was the only person who responded with knowledge about the Pandora LM-401 and LM-402 limiters, which were mfg. & sold by Studio Supply, when owned by Dave Harrison. Fairly obscure FET limiter. Lee had two of the two channel LM-402's when I visited. HIs console was an MCI 400 series which I assume was what he originally installed, and there was a 2" 16 track of some sort, don't recall.
