Just wrote the following text below for another place a few minutes ago, Martin is a nice guy and i got his and Ralfs "new" album before release so i had some time to listen to it already, it is a really really well done compilation and i can recommend it wholeheartedly...
(Especially if you might have never heard of them ... they had much popularity in this niche back in time.)
Hope it's ok to share with all the fine guitarists around here, i think he also has an account around here.
Dear friends of guitar music.
the guitar duo Kolbe & Illenberger had a huge influence on acoustic guitar music when they stylistically set new measures for what is doable. They experimented between new age, jazz, rock and experimental music, musically and technically pushing things forward, with virtuosity and taste. Many acoustic guitarists have been influenced by this work. Some might don't even know the roots of what they play on acoutic guitar today....
Most probably still the unbeaten "best" geman guitar duo ever, but i know that the both would never think of playing music being the challenge *against* anyone. In opposite, cooperation with other extraordinary musicians of that time took place and enhanced the duo when they crossed the borders to jazz and jazz rock with electrical instruments from time to time.
3 decades after their breakup, Martin and Ralf now released a double album containing what they found "essential" and it is a beautiful album, nicely put together by the artists themselves and contains not only old material but also previously unreleased tracks, all remastered in a really tasteful quality in the sense of the artists (and this is unfortunately most often not the case with compilation remasters!).
Until now, the surprising number of very loyal fans of the duo and collectors of their music. that after all this time still are out there, had to share and buy the more or less rare vinyl albums of both on the used market, and they were played still after all this years.
A while ago i had the pleasure to listen into the unreleased album, now it is out and available everywhere ... and maybe you don't want to miss this extraordinary album.
Be sure to take a listen, it is more than worth it.
Especially if you are into guitar music.
