Anyone?
I'm really not up for spending 5k on preamps. I think if I could get 8 that are better than the Mackies I should be okay.

Never tried these, but the CAPI pres are inexpensive, even the pre built vp26's. The Warm WA12'S are also cheap and supposed to be good. Both of these are based on API, which I think would work well with your style. On that note, I'm interested in opinions of the GAP too, since I don't have anything Neve style.

I have 2 fully modded units. One from zenpro and one from another tech. I have not heard them un modded, since I bought my first one pre modded. They are solid units and handle a wide range of duties. Have plenty of quiet gain for ribbons and gently played acoustic guitar. Nicely even round tone and a good option next to my CAPI pres.

Yeah I'm thinking of doing maybe four API type, four Neve type and then keep the Mackie for extra stuff like Hihats and ride. I'll look more into these.

I had a Pre73 and currently have a 573. When I had the Pre73, I didn't really appreciate the grit the unit adds and now I do. But I sold it and the guy I sold it to told me it died. Only about 3 years old. My 573 gets used where I don't need low end. Great on bottom snare, etc. Sometimes guitars and backup vox. It just doesn't have much low end. Compared to the CAPI stuff, there is really no contest. Having one stock GA unit is useful, but a bunch would result in a mix that would need a lot of low end work. I wouldn't buy more than one of them.

I have 8x 312s and 8x 1272s and I can't imagine not having both. 312s for the close drums, distorted guitars, vocals. the 1272s for overheads, cymbals, vocals, acoustic guitars, etc. If I had to pick, I'd leave the mackie preamps for things like synths and tracks that don't have a large role in the mix.
I listened to some GAP73 and I thought they were more boomy and less sizzly than real neve preamps.. Not thin at all..

I had a stock gap and it was alright. Had that "neve" color but was wooly and dark not my cup of tea. Although I had a friend who recorded his entire album with it and the vocals sound phenomenal. Now I own 2 JJ audio modded gap 73's and they are a thing of beauty. Thick, colored but can still be cleanish. I prefer it to the vintech 573 and BAE dmp. I'm trying to get a HA JR73 to shoot out against it.

Check it out on Clipilator , Zen Pro Audio ,
They have an original and modded version . You can download many different mic pres to compare . I burned a cd and listened in my car for awhile .
Out of all the ones I downloaded the Modded Gap was the best . It sounded much BIGGER modded .
The Warm mic pre was good too for API .
But the Modded Gap had the Neve vibe and sounded the best to me out of all the mic pres I compared .
The Mackie Oynx was right there with them , but just clean , no color really .

I wonder how close the GAP transformers are to the carnhills(which are only remotely close to the originals..)? In the case of the darkness, it's possible that the transformers and zobel network don't work together and the zobel is too heavy for the transformer.
