My initial impression was...hmmm...not as thick as the Sta...but then again, it can do waaaay more...and it can sit ANYTHING right in your face. Obviously, it's able to clamp down on things much faster. Seems like the way a 1176 should sound...I'm gonna play with it for a couple weeks to see if we bond.

OK...It's freaking good...This is gonna be hard to part with, but I'm not sure I can afford it! Here's a snippet (pardon the out of tunage) with Mic Rehab CV4 into a Helios into the 176. Actually went 12:1 which is higher than I would ever go with a 1176...fast attack slow release. Yes, I know it ain't perfect and yes, I might have pushed the pre a little too much...but I can hear the 176 goo... soundcloud.com/johnandkris/retro176scratch

I like it! I just don't hear this sort of sound out of a software emulation. Keep it awhile, I say.

Sounds great, John. Keep it. I used a vintage 1176 rev D for the vocals on my last album and I was surprised/shocked about the ratio I would use. I always thought 4:1 was high enough, but I used 12:1 in the end and it sounded fantastic. And thank you very much John, now I want a Helios 69...

I like it too. Not near as wooly as the Sta, more modern. Sounds like a 76. Good stuff.

Sounds like a record. What more do you want? I might add a touch of LA2a or CL1b to it for extra gloss but that's it. Doesn't need any EQ.

Speaking of "sounds like a record", John, do you have a track that this vocal goes with? I'd love if we could hear these cuts that you do in a mix too, in order to gain a bit of context.

Well, truth be told, I EQ'd on the way in on the Helios...and I tried something different this time. I took -2db off with the 10Khz shelf and this time dialed out some 6khz because things were a little sibilant on some of my last few vocals. This is the Mic Rehab CV4...Shannon and I have talked about taking out some of that, but I've hesitate because I don't want to futz up a good thing...His last 10 or so CV4's have gone out with less top than mine - I was kind of the guinea pig.

Just listened again...and damn - that does sound pretty damn good. Except for the singing...jeesh...you guys are lucky I have no shame...because that take sounded like shit.

Oh - and I got tired of playing accompanying tracks every time I tested something...so I went on itunes and bought some super cheesy karaoke version of Simply Red's version of, "If You Don't Know Me By Now"...felt like it has really good dynamics for tests...and I always loved the song. I have certainly butchered it on this site enough.

Sounds great man. I've read about these but have never seen one personally or heard samples. I'm gonna think about picking one up possibly in place of the 1176 I was going to buy. I think enough guys are onto these things now and I've never heard a bad word about em.

Anyone else used the 176 or compared to the Sta? Just from the samples on Johnkenn's soundcloud, it seems to be a bit cleaner/less beefy than the sta, but sounds great. Any thoughts?
