Funny you two doctors mention it, ( drsax and drbill) because the AKG variants such as the 414ULS and 414XLS are still my favorite microphones on saxes and clarinets. The two doctors... lol... My mag mics have the “dreaded” Teflon CK12 capsules and quite frankly - they are stunning sounding. I also have an AKG C424 quadraphonic Mic with the same caps and it sounds real nice. Sometimes I feel like swapping them with Tim’s capsules or hunting down some original brass caps, but the mics Sound so good I really don’t want to mess with them. Enter the Chandler mic... it’s the first mic I’ve tried that is in or above the league of my mag mics. I had a beesneez tribute 1 for a couple years and while others rave about it, it just didn’t do it for me. The Max Mod 87ai to 67 kit is sweet - it has been much preferred to the T1... I also have some other nice mics, and have used a lot of great mics - but the mag mics and chandler stand above the rest for what I do.

This all reminds me, I really need to finish my video featuring the REDD mic. Lots of live performances. I just haven't had the chance. My wife and I even got to share the stage with Daniel Rodriguez, the singing cop from 9/11.

Thanks achase. I can only imagine if I had some time to really dial in my favorite settings or get the REDD in a good room, wow.
I'm liking it more and more as I go. I love the Soyuz 0-13 SDC's for acoustic guitar, especially in busy tracks, but man, for the solo acoustic guitar I did in my track, THAT'S the sound I've been looking for!
My benchmark is Mark Knopfler's "The Ragpickers Dream", and this mic gets it. He's probably using a U67 or U47, but the room he's in has a lovely shimmer to it. There's a combination of depth and fullness with a sparkling top the REDD has that bring's life and realism to the sound and it's never edgy.

Some EVIL person once swapped out the brass CK!2 capsule from my AKG C414 EB, for a teflon piece... before I bought it... and it was still a decent mic. But AFTER I put in one of Tim's brass capsules? WOW... my ears POPPED! What a sound. Worth every penny and effort.

Ward - What differences were the most pronounced? 1. the removal of the dreaded 'Gack' type of high mid quality 2. the extension of the high end into the air range like it was lifting from 5K all the way up 3. the ever-so-slight dip from about 250-700 hz, which is basically an automatic mud cleaner 4. The warm and clarity in the low end from the 50-200 range 5. The 3D nature of the sound . . . can't really explain that, but you know what it is. You walk around the control room and even out the division doors and the sound 'follows' you.

P.S. I have no idea why my MB Pro's auto-correct feature seems like it needed to remove the th from warmth. It's been doing a lot of that lately. GRRR

Yeah I remember comparing a brass CK12 414eb to a teflon 414eb, even if you don't hear the " GAKK " in the mids of the teflon, put it up against a nice brass and suddenly it will be there in your face every time you plug the mic in. A good Brass CK12 will have almost as much 3-D / dimension as a M7. I have made some decent recordings with teflon CK12's but I know they would have been better with Brass !

Thanks for the feedback guys. I may have to give it a shot. I’ve heard great things about Tim’s capsules.
And now back to today’s session... on the Chandler REDD 😀

Just tracked the same vocal again with the REDD a few minutes ago. Once you begin to get used to it, you start playing with proximity, it's just addicting. You begin to become a better singer because of the nuance you're hearing without extra crispiness.

It's those sounds we remember that really make an impact. It's hard to chase them. When something like the Redd comes along, it makes a huge difference. I'll take 3 of them and some talent, FedEx overnight. Save

I always love when this happens, ..when an Artist hears himself, or herself through something that "inspires" their performance towards that magic moment. This is one of the very first reasons to use gear that does that to you. in my experience.

I always love when this happens, ..when an Artist hears himself, or herself through something that "inspires" their performance towards that magic moment. This is one of the very first reasons to use gear that does that to you. in my experience. Absolutely. This is why we search and try and sell and buy again and again. If I could buy the Chandler REDD, I'd also get a Soyuz 0-11, and I'd be good to go. My other mics would be here in case they're a better fit for someone or to save for the day I'm back in a real room and need some mics for a band playing together. So far, it's the Chandler REDD, a vintage U67, and the Soyuz 0-17 that got me in a great mood when tracking vocals. It seems you do get what you pay for when it comes to mics. The promise of off-shore mics hasn't truly been realized despite the hype. I have high hopes for the Stam mics.

Just getting ready to do vocals here on a new project for "Frank Carillo & The Bandoleros" Would love to hear this Mic on Franks voice! He has a very unique voice!
Just in the last few weeks, we've tried, (and not really liked!) Neumann U-87 Neumann M-149 Soundelux U-95 Soundelux-U-99 Shure SM-7 So far the best is....my old Neumann 67, But even that I feel is real close but just not right...
So if there is any place in NY, (I'm 90 miles north of the city) that rents these mic's please let me know.

While the Chandler's still in residence, I've been rushing to do a few quick takes of some old songs and a couple of new ones. I just pop a basic drum pattern down, record a basic acoustic guitar, and do some vocal takes. If I want to complete the tracks, I'll add orchestrations later.
This is kind of funny. A producer I know mentioned he was working on a Christmas album. I mentioned I had an idea for a Christmas song, so he said, well. hurry up and send it. So, I wrote in in two days, but then found out he needed cheerful, happy Christmas songs, and me being me, I came up with a dirge of a song, like a Christmas at the Tom Wait's house kind of thing.
So, I sped it up a little and now I have the vocal tracks to complete the song with. I have four or five takes, so I can comp a little if a line or two needs tweaking. I'll try to do a couple more before I send the REDD back.. I'm gonna miss it, a lot.
Straight into the Apollo, no processing while tracking, and just a little compression and reverb afterwards.
