Hey,
I am still thinking about building up 8 channels of pre, eq and comps for tracking and for mixing.
Am liking what I am reading hear and at the capi site about the eqs: bt50 and the stepped 5 band ones.
Looking at a 10 slot 500 chassis so 2 extra slots.
What are people's experiences of these eqs, what do you use on what and why ?
thx !

Am liking what I am reading hear and at the capi site about the eqs: bt50 and the stepped 5 band ones. Looking at a 10 slot 500 chassis so 2 extra slots. What are people's experiences of these eqs, what do you use on what and why ? thx ! Firstly if you are DIY'ing just get Jeff's 11 slot VPR 500 Series Rack and external floor mount power supply. Personally I wouldn't touch any 500 series rack with a built in power supply. I have found the module that is fitted closest to most inbuilt power supplys typically suffer from the most noise, especially mic pre's when gained up. Secondly I was running a pair of BT50's yesterday and they are great. I have them setup with 'clean' op amps using a LME49710 IC in the A1 position and a Hairball Audio JE-990 discrete op amp in A2 driving the transformer. They really brought a somewhat dull fingerpicked acoustic guitar part to life (no picks, just fleshy fingertips). After playing with these for a while you can almost begin to identify the API 550A signature sound. If you're familiar with Beck's Sea Change you'll hear it especially on the acoustic guitars. I haven't used them on drums yet but I could image they would be great. I plan on adding a second pair with Jensen hi-nickel output transformers. The 553's are also nice. Simple 3 band EQ for uncomplicated tone shaping. Pull out some mids on say some electric rhythm guitar to leave some space for a vocal etc. The LC53A's are what I'd describe as a softer sounding EQ. Smooth and sweet. Don't have any LC25's or LC40's.

Yeah, I only know the LC53A's, would agree with softer sounding EQ, smooth and sweet as compared to the TB550A 550A clones. Really nice in the upper ranges, soft sounding in the bottom.

Can't comment on the sound quality of the BT50's but I built a pair of these. Difficulty of the build is reasonable...not as many parts as an FC526, more on par with a VP28. Suspect that everyone else is aware of this but I found that by presorting the resistors, diodes etc on the BOM the assembly time was reduced dramatically and was safer to work on it if I was tired! As with all of Jeff's designs...build directions are very detailed and they work first time!
Good luck Mac

Someone else posted a thread like this recently. See if you can check out those comments. I posted a video putting the lc53 thru its paces on some strings
