So, a week or two ago I trashed my PT pref file, and everything reset inside PT12. My meters are behaving differently now. I can see the peaks only indicated by the little line, but my meters don't fully follow. Meaning, my meters will dance around -18dbfs, but never fully go up to the peaks. It didn't used to do this. I can't figure out what setting gets them back. I've been to the meter preference menu, but what am I looking for? Feel dumb for asking.

There are so many options in PT now, that it's impossible to guess where you had them set before you trashed your pref's. Generally speaking, it sounds like they might be set to "Linear", and previously, you might have had them set to VU or more likely Digital VU - or even classic.
Right click on the meters of various sound sources and/or complete mixes and start fooling around with switching them until you figure out where you want to be. Then go to Preferences > Metering > Track & Master Meter Types & choose your preferred metering there for individual tracks and Masters. You can also fool around with the balistics and a bunch of other stuff.

Checked - all my audio tracks and aux returns are "DigitalVU". Master fader is "Linear". That's probably the default reference cause I trash my preferences pretty often and don't recall ever adjusting them.
The beauty of PT and this metering is so that you can set them to whatever makes sense for what you're doing. I could definitely see a changeup for tracking live ensembles, mixing and mastering. Fool around with it to get back to where you like - or maybe you'll even find something BETTER!! <thumbsup>

I remember switching the meters for the first time in PT 12 and it definitely " feels " different seeing the meters reacting differently peak and rms wise then what I was used too. Like DrBill said I ended up using different metering for different occasions. I have my monitor output calibrated to the K system so that can help when Mastering for me. I also like the ones that has the sample peak and rms in the same visual...
