Hi Chase. Just watched the first one, great vox. The nearest I've got to an 1176 is the first generation IK plug ( which didn't really wow me, and I always found something better). I know it's youtube quality / subjective etc, but what were you're thoughts on this RP6? Does it seem to have a decent 1176 vibe? Seems very slightly brittle to me - is that the 1176 sound? Thanks.

I Am in the process of watching the vids... I feel the 1176 when gain staged towards to distortion can start to sound pinched in the 1-3khz region, however the 1176 is the classic vocal compressor you have heard on your countless favorite records, and i am sure those vocals dont sound thin or pinched!
The 1176 sound ( vintage Til F had trafo I/o F/ G Went to IC i/o and G was trafo removed, IC i/o ) is also the circuit which is class a and transformer coupled I/O which undoubtedly leads to the sound... If a unit claiming to be an 1176 a-f doesn't have the correct circuit/ components how can it sound like an 1176? ( ex: think u47: v14m tube, m7/ k47/ capsule, bvo8 transformer, can't be a u47 without those parts, therefore sound wise..... ) Cheers, hope this helps

Thanks Chase, yes I think pinched is a better description. Warren Huart was being quite diplomatic about the mic pre's, I think they seem a bit weak for anything other than a condensor. I almost like the DBX type one. Also need to see how the rack would work, as without it you've got a bad hair day. I really am trying to love compression, I understand it's necessity but it's a real love hate thing.. ...Except, have you tried the Valley Dynamite on a drum bus. Was playing with my outboard / plugs last night and this thing rocks on a drum bus, it even sounded musical, so maybe I am starting to accept these evil machines

The valley people dynamite has been known as a parallel drum crusher that enhances sustain and bloom of the drums. Ok so in order to learn compression you have to hear what it is doing and frankly certain monitors don't/ can't reproduce this well at all leading to one having a hard time hearing and learning compression... I was the same way for a long time..
Try this: Get an 1176 comp and a drum loop...
Play with the attack and release and make the snare or kick as inaudible as possible by using attack and release and threshold... try to isolate each element of the drum loop ( dig in deep ) this will help you hear the compression as well... I tried to find a video example but got lost in a sea of compression 101 vids lol... YouTube search " the pro audio files compression " you will find great info!

I really am trying to love compression, I understand it's necessity but it's a real love hate thing.. Serpent SB4001, Splice, SA3a, Chimera = total and instant love. No tweaking required. Re : DynaMite. Owned (and still own) one for 20+ years. Original black face. It's a one trick pony. Musical is not a term I would give it. If you want MASSIVE and UNDENIABLE spank, then it's your baby. Nothing will spank like a Dynamite. It can destroy and give you that compressor distortion like nothing else. For normal use, it would not get used. I would NEVER use it on a vocal. And mostly never use it on bass unless I'm looking to destroy the bass sound. Then, OK. On funky guitars it might be cool. Subtle? Never. Bitchy and obnoxious? Oh yeah.....

Thanks, will have a go at this, and learn a bit more. Even the SSL emu plugs on a mix sounded pretty flat to me, although my humble VLA did pull a mix together in a nice way without destroying the sound. Hence love hate. Need to try a HW 1176 methinks. As far as the little Sknote comps, probably better to just pay a bit more and go 500 series, especially as more and more are starting to pop up second hand now.

It's not a chain. Just each and every one brings instant love every time I insert it into a signal path.
