Someone on GS graciously pasted a track of a 3U GZ800 vs. a TLM-193. I started digging through the forums and my word that mic has gotten dragged through the mud..
If wouldn't you mind, take a listen.. The more I listen to it the more I really like it, I think it could do with a bit more EQ to balance it out but it sounds like a record to me.. (Added the GZ for reference).

To my ears, the TLM193 always sounds like someone wanted to pile more low mid into the sound and add some distortion to give it more of a U87 sound without adding any of the U87 magic.
And comparatively, the GZ800 sounds really thin, anemic, weak, and ineffective.
But, I've been known to be wrong too.

I don't disagree actually (in fact first thing I mentioned was the LMF buildup) and you near enough said the same as me when comparing. Still think it has a bit of a record "sheen to it", but again everything you said. The TLM does seem like it would be pliable and handy in some contexts.. I might test one out (at some point), bigger fish to fry before that.

I have seen comments that the 193 sounds very much like a 170 or 89, and then also that all 3 are very different.

uhh.. maybe take a look at the new Warm WA87? I can't vouch for it yet since I haven't tried one, but the comparisons floating around are promising.
