I just posted this video comparing the Warm Audio WA2A onto compressor to the UAD LA2A plugin, and I also included three different tracks, all with the lead vocals done with the WA2A. Sorry I didn't have the Teletronix hardware to compare, but it might help give some idea of how it sounds. I level matched and put settings as equal as possible, but naturally, different frequencies get pushed, so one file might sound louder than another.
I'd like to know what you guys think..

I hear the same thing in mine. That 250 to 400 hz 'push' but that's what makes it real!
EDIT: I meant to say "I hear the same thing in my SA2a" not "I hear the same thing in mine" . . . which I find idiomatic to the basic LA2a design.

Yes! I also think that with care, that could be dialed in a little better than I did in the video, and be more transparent. I thought the effect it had on the vocals of the finished tracks was remarkable. Considering these were done in an untreated living room through the UAD Apollo's converters, I'm surprisingly pleased. On the second track, Long Road back it's barely noticeable, but the lesser quality without it was clear.

Only listened briefly but found the WA2A to be far more kind on acoustic guitar. Thx for the comparison!

I think the wa2a sounds very good. I think the most dramatic difference was on the acoustic guitar. It's like the plugin was getting confused compression wise, like it was caught between attacking and releasing.
The plugin sounded better with the vox on top of the guitar because the vocal covers up the wish washy Attack / release issue. The vox seems more present with the wa2a, a little extra something sprinkled on top... Thanks for the vid

The acoustic track was really interesting. I had to stop myself from lowering the volume on it, because they were level matched, but the WA2A track was so much fuller with details present, it almost sounds like I raised the volume, which I didn't. I still need more time to find the perfect pre-emphasis setting for my vocal, but I thought my friend Dusty Wright's vocal showed the WA2A beautifully.

Great work... nice video...... dug the first song a lot.
As for me , it seems... hardware wins... that WA2A sounds really good....
I have two LA2As, a STAM SA2A and a drip LA2A with three attack release times... (opto 5?) built with premium components.
That WA2A sounds like it would fit right in here.... 8)
cheers

Everything about it from sound, to build , to feel is absolutely classy. I can't rate it highly enough. Likewise the SA4000 just first class. cheers Wiz

Do all 3 brands of unit sound the same? Is the UA more silky on top and the Stam pushed in the bottom. Or whatever?

I'm curious about that too Wiz.
Sozocaps, no, the WA and the LA2A plug levels were as identical as I could get them. That's how amazing the difference really is. I need a little more practice with it, but the WA2A does seem to get me there.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating in this thread. Jcoutu and I shot out his Stam against my WA-2A (which I LOVE) on my vocal - and we both gave the Stam the win (with my vocal). My impression is that they both sound MUCH better than SW; they simply offer two different colorations. I don't remember all the details, but the Warm offered a bit more in the 200 hz range. Let's put it this way - I may end up with a Stam, but I don't see myself getting rid of my WA-2A.

Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry.... 8) I use the drip on Bass a lot... and vocals if I want to have it sound a little more hi fi than the STAM. Stam sounds great on Vocals, its my lead vocal mix compressor of choice, where the same preamp and mic combination will go through the DRIP to give it a slightly different sound... STAM sounds thicker than the drip... sounds great on electric guitar, acoustic guitar... Compression action is similar. Havent used the WA2A obviously... but the sound of it on Martins voice and acoustic was instantly familiar... If I owned a SA2A i would buy the WA2A before buying a second SA2A I think... similar compression action different sound.. which is what I would want. Does that help? cheers Wiz

I think one of the main differences between the Stam and the Warm might be the tubes. It would really be interesting to hear the Stam and the Warm with the same tube configuration. Then we'd really know how they compare to each other. I wonder how much the full compliment of tubes in the Stam would cost. One summer day, I may order them, just to try it for fun.
I have a drawer full of holy grail NOS guitar amp tubes, and the stock JJ EL34 killed them all, so you never know, but tube choice is important.
