I watched Vance Powell's endorsement of the Burl Mothership and he said he was comfortable converting tape to Pro Tools via the Burl.
But he's hitting tape first.................
So, I was wondering if anybody is using tape. And if so, what's the best bang for your buck? Secondly, for those using other hardware tape emulators-Anamod/Cranesong/Fatso- do you find them to be close to tape?

I was using tape until the machine died a while back and so now it needs a tech.
best sounds I've tracked were through tape and onto the daw. everything I think sounds better for it. the problem is you need to know how to calibrate the machine and tape is very expensive. I think if you are cutting an album with a band then it's worth it.
if being used for overdubs etc the cost and maintenance of tape is a big issue.
I've not used a plugin yet that made me think hey they nailed that tape thing.

Talk to illacov about his new box, maybe you can convince him we need an unbiased review & talk to Noah about the JCF converter that is based on Ampex 440. Do the emulations sound like tape? Each gets something right and nothing yet nails it. They don't require the expense and upkeep either!

I'm using tape almost every day. I been using ATR for a bit. I just tracked a record on some old GP9 and I'm about to mix it to rmgi 468. It's a +4 tape.
I just finished mixing a record (14 songs in 5 days!) with Dave Raphael the owner of AWTAC. He's an old tape head and he knows his stuff. We mixed to the ATR and found that it seems to have a small window where it sounds good. We loved it on some mixes and not on others.
I gotta qualify and say that I use ampex machines, though and I'm convinced the machines have as much to do with the sound as the tape. I don't think I'd use tape at all if I didn't love the sound of these machines. It's one big system that has a signature sound. I have an MM1000/16 an MM1200/24 and a 440b/2 track. They're all GIANT pains in the ass but they all have a massive fingerprint. It's a total nightmare sometimes and it's a big commitment but I love it.
I love the Latte and it sounds killer but it doesn't in any way make things sound "tapey". Don't buy it expecting that!!! It's a really sweet sounding mastering loop. I THINK it was created for Doug Sax. I think... Anyway it's based on the playback circuit of a 440 and it can actually be used that way. I've done it. Josh from JCF wired my 440 up so I could use the latte for playback amps. I don't do it anymore because it was not convenient ergonomically. I like the sound of the 440 with all it's nightmarish inconsistency. I woulda thrown the thing out the window a few times if I could lift it though!
I think I'm off topic. Oops.
Yeah, tape is cool. Playing back off an Ampex machine it sounds like 75 years of popular music to me. 1 more piece of the puzzle.

I'd agree with Noah that the "tape" aspect of tape is only a PART of what most call the "tape" sound. IMO, the Ampex and MCI machines (although they often behave like petulant cranky dinosaurs) are the only way to go if you are doing tape. Tascam, Fostex, Otari or even Studer don't get me there. All that said, I'm 110% AOK without tape. Don't need it anymore, and I SURE don't want the maintenance and headaches. BUT, if I was tracking an album on tape, it would be on an Ampex or MCI.

I was stupid enough to sell my M15A 8 years ago otherwise I would set up some files, all the old mixes are lost during an HD crash. I throw in Airwindows ToTape... no one talks about it but I like it on some mixes. I cant judge if it does the trick, the gap is too long.

I have the Otari MTR12 and the MX5050-VIII that will both get used when I'm finally set up here. I nice hardware emulator is available from Sound Skulptor, even has a 500series version. I'll probably build a couple just 'cause I like building things.
