I'm looking at a KM84 and the owner-who owns a mic shop and did the rehab- says it has a brand new NOS Neumann capsule. Not being is the mic rehab business, I'm wondering if I should pass because it's not an original capsule.
Anybody know if I should hold out for an original capsule?
He goes on to say The KM84 was recapped and the Fet's bias was calibrated. The circuit is not modified in any way from the original. Not sure how much of a rehab this is and how it could affect the quality compared to the original mic.
Evaluating these old mics is tricky business for one as uneducated in mics as me.
Any comments on this would be much appreciated.

From what I understand, Neumann still has/makes the capsule for replacement in KM84's. Sounds legit.

"a brand new NOS Neumann capsule." I'd rather have a new Neumann capsule than something that's how many decades old. "Recapped, biased and calibrated" Sounds like a new-old mic. What are you worried about?

Aside from the obvious speculation, consider the fact that whoever buys it from you is going to have the same concerns, but worse because you'll be passing on the story that someone else told you. I always consider these things when purchasing and make sure that I won't be losing money when I go to sell.

They do still make the 84 Capsule, I would want to see paperwork to prove that's what's in the mic though!

They aren't nearly as exotic as the LDC capsules. I had a dead KM-84 so we opened it up and the diaphragm dropped right out. Figuring at worst we'd need to spring for a new capsule, we dropped it in an ultra-sonic bath, popped it back into the mike and it still works perfectly.

I would say then, "why the hell cant someone make a mic that sounds like the km84?"
But then I would remember I sold my KM84 because I thought the Gefell M300 was really damn close.

I've never heard anything with as uniform a directional pattern.

Its not the 84 but its a price performance king a no brainer. Its like my 184 without the HF bite, lve them both. www.thomann.de/gb/beyerdynamic_mc930.htm

Yes they are still available brand new. UK Sennheiser website... spares.sennheiser.co.uk/neumann/km-84/neumann-kk84-capsule-for-km84-microphone-053228.htmlI bought two brand new Neumann KK84 capsules for my KMi bodies (purchased the mics as KM85's) about 10 months ago through Sennheiser Australia. They had to come from Germany and took a few weeks to arrive. I recently used three KM84's while live tracking an acoustic/folk group. Two KM84's in X/Y mode on a Taylor acoustic and the other KM84 on a mandolin all running through SCA J99 preamps. (Jensen Twin Servo style clones) How did it sound? "You'll have to pry my KM84's from my cold, dead hands!"

Believe me, if someone could get a quantity of those capsules there'd be clones.

Believe me, if someone could get a quantity of those capsules there'd be clones. You can get the capsules but in what quantity I don't know. Maybe some should ask Neumann/Sennheiser for a quote on 500 units and see what they come back with? Over $600 US just for the capsule means at least $2000 per mic retail I would think. At $300 per capsule it becomes a little more sensible but it would just make more sense to reissue the KM84 in its original form... wishful thinking!

I would say then, "why the hell cant someone make a mic that sounds like the km84?" Mr. Rhoads could easily make the capsule and probably the entire microphone exactly to spec... and make it last forever. It would probably (and rightfully) cost more as well.

My guess is if someone were to do that Neumann would put in a policy of requiring serial # or old Capsule be sent to them for replacement. Neumann has no interest in becoming an OEM, Sennhieser knows it's the Capsules that keep Neumann in the top tier of current mics. Selling Capsules to another builder hurts that !
