I'm looking at buying a Marshall head for my Marshall 4x12 cabinet.
I'm thinking about a used Marshall JCM 2205, but these are old. Has anybody played the 2205 and compared it to newer marshall head offerings? If so, is it worth it taking the risk on the older head?

Favorites": 2203 and 2204. AKA 1977-79 Marshall Mark 2 Master Volume series with the cascaded gain option or mod. I don't even see why on Earth Marshall even made another amp design afterwards. It does EVERYTHING.

I have a 1979 JMP (2203) which sounds great through a 4x12. I also have a 1988 reissue of a 1973 50w JMP (1987S), which is awesome. These are currently my favorites. Love my Silver Jubilee also. It all depends which sound you're looking for, more bluesy/classic rock or more modern rock/metal(ish). It also depends on which speakers you have in the cab. I actually heard good things about the 1987X which should be pretty close to my 1987S. But if you like the JCM800 tone, get one of those. Really, you can't go wrong with a Marshall.

It does EVERYTHING. That's a good question Ward. And I don't know how much of a variation there is- and how really important it is- in their new amp. Here's the new JVM 205H, like the 2205 a 50 watt 2-channel Marshall head. Like the 2205, it's pre amp tubes are 4 x ECC83 and it's power amp valves are 1 x ECC83, 2 x EL34 And it's new, which is important imo when it's hard for me to find/ hear 20-30 year old amps which have had tube changes, modifications and studio and road wear. Playing starts at 3:17

I would agree if I lived in Boston,Nashville,New York LA et. al. where I could drive and see/hear the gear, I don't and I'm not going to spend 1K+ on anything based on an internet ad.

Suggest you check out the Friedman offerings, as far as new stuff goes.

Suggest you check out the Friedman offerings, as far as new stuff goes. Both the Friedman BE100 and Phil X signature heads are amazing.... but if you want an amp that does EVERY Marshall sound accurately, you should really consider the Metropoulos MetroplexIt might just be the greatest amp of the genre EVER made. The tonal (yes tone, not gain or distortion or crunch alone) variations are mind boggling.

Just got an offer for a 2205 for $1,050.00 including shipping. Has a Dean Zink repair slip and seller says it's in perfect working order. No footswitch. Still considering new.....

If it were me, I'd find an early 80's vertical input 2203 or 2204. Those seem to be the favorite and will probably only increase in value. I'm sure the 2205 probably sounds great, but doesn't have that added desirability.

I just looked at a used 80's 2203 with vertical inputs and it's $1,800. So, the market wants more for this amp. Don't know how long (or why) that will hold but I suspect it's Hendrix, Page, Van Halen etc. However, I like Tom Morello's tone which turned me on to the 2205. Who knows. Maybe in 20 years Morello's success will boost prices.
