Any suggestions on the best service and lowest cost shipping methods? I have a number of valuable things i'll be sending off, and i'm a bit sticker shocked This could be a valuable resource thread for a lot of us this time of year... 8)

No. Seems expensive no matter how who you go with, especially if you pay for them to pack the item. I think with UPS, to really be protected in an insurance claim they either have to pack it or have proof that it was packed to their standards. Best bet it to have whoever you're shipping to cover the cost.

I have a Fedex Business account and almost always ship via Fedex Ground, insured for full value and require Direct Signature on the receiving end. In my experience, though relatively costly, I have had peace of mind with my shipments. I even sometimes ask a seller to use my account number when they ship something to me, and also request Direct Signature when I receive something on my own account. Interestingly, there have been a few times where a package was left here not-signed for even though sig was requested. I do appreciate the Fedex Tracking System, however. I have found recently that the US Postal Service has some pretty good rates on small packages, though I have not looked into their insurance and tracking policies. They are certainly trying to win back customers from the other non-govt carriers.

IME, FedEx ground is best for cost and coverage. USPS gets more expensive when u add insurance.
