Yo Duuudes...
I was wondering if any of you fine, talented folks have an opinion on, or experience with, the DBX 520 De-Esser.
I have been using the UAD Precision DeEsser plug-in and I find it to be fine (I do VO work). However, the way my rig is set up, I run through a hardware pre into a WA76, WA2a and Warm EQP-1a before going into an Apollo Twin and of course, that leaves my UAD de-esser in the chain after my very slight compression. It would seem the better option obviously would be to have the de-esser right after the pre and before the other hardware.
Seeing that Sweetwater has the DBX 520 on sale for $99 until the end of Jan 2017, I was considering using this as an excuse to start putting together a 500 series rack, but I figured I'd ask here first to see if anyone likes/dislikes the 520.

To a lot of people the dbx circuit is still the gold standard. At $99 you can't go wrong for a hardware purchase.

That is a ridonkulous price .... I might pick one up too. Cheaper than the plugin I was about to buy (fab filter pro ds).

I just ordered one from Front End Audio I'll have a review by the end of the week. They have an additional 12% off with the holiday coupon code... just nuts.

I have also been looking at the dbx 520 de-esser and dbx 560a comp/limiter for use live on vocals. I use a x32 rack for compactability and easy adjustment away from the mixer as places we play are small and lacking in space. The vocalist is pretty dynamic and pretty essy, so I use the onboard compression and de-esser inserted on the vocal. However, I feel the compression and the de-esser leave a lot to be desired especially when you start pushing them, to me they sound sort of phasey, although there seems to be hundreds of people who say they sound perfect... The plan was to use a 1U 3 slot 500 series rack with neve/api clone pre, dbx560a comp, dbx520 for vocal chain, to try and reduce some of the processing inside the x32 and to try and gain a better vocal sound. Seems you guys really dig the 520/560 so looks like a good choice. Thanks for the info!

I picked up a pair for my VO rig along with a Heritage OST-4. Got 'em Friday. I really like them a lot better than the UA Precision DeEsser plug in. Sound very natural. My deliverables are always solo voice tracks so every flaw is out in the open and getting the De-essing right had been eluding me for some time. I like the UA de-esser, but like in most cases, the hardware just has that sonic mojo that you don't miss in the plug-in until you start to replace it with hardware. I have a naturally sibilant voice, too so I can only imagine if the 520 works for me for what I need it to do, it should do the trick for most.

That example sounds great to me de esser! I wish SW sounded like that! If SW can't get a $100 HW de esser correct how can I trust a $300 SW compressor?
I wish I would've had one or three of those DBX 520 this past weekend for the nightmare sibilance I dealt with in a mix. Geez clip gain plus multiple de esser s were not doing anything. I'm talking clipped vocals on an mbox preamp, with a $200 Chinese condenser recorded to an MP3 clipped beat that had -3 dynamic range I swear... Yes the dr was 3 on the squashed MP3 beat...
Yes I made it work, I could post the original if folks want to hear b4 and after ...... I doubt anyone wants to though ðŸ˜

Haha ok I will... you want to hear their rough mix vs my final master or just the raw sibilance slathered vox? Is there a way to upload direct to RGO? I don't want to put the clips on my Soundcloud? jcoutu1 what do you do to upload the A/B mp3's comparisons here? I can play them from my phone as well as desktop but they aren't " public " if you get my drift...

It's part of the same space allotment divided between emails/atttachments/Hangouts or Spaces pictures, etc. Use it (mostly) like dropbox.

Been using the 520 since it came out. In all vocal chains. Love it. I wish it was on sale when I got it. I paid $149. Still a good price.
